RE: Toledo
If that is the case my first question would be..."Coach, weren't you the one calling timeouts and making every effort to extend the game in the last two minutes with your team down by 13?" He ABSOLUTELY was trying to extend the game and who can really blame him. He has to send his kids a message that he ain't gonna quit on them.
BUT. Can you then whine and complain about Leonard (if that is what he was so upset about) coming in and shooting the ball? Is Kent supposed to let him call timeouts and let Toledo keep playing hard and just lie down? Come on coach. Plus, Leonard is a young pup, he wanted his. You know enough about KIDS to let that slide don't ya coach?
Lets hope he was up to something else because that one doesn't fly.
As for the game. Kent played very well defensively and Justin Greene looked good against a toothless defense. Kent went on cruise control for a while and who can blame them? The good thing was the Sherman's minutes were down a bit. Gonna be a big one in Western Michigan Wednesday!

You mean bench players jack threes when they get into blowouts. Hell, if I ever got into a game, I was hardpressed to resist the temptation to shoot from halfcourt.

I love Statsheet. They showed the game was statistically over at the 1:33 mark.

RE: Toledo
They won this game without Sherman. Not that he played poorly but they just did not need him to do anything but play an average game. A good sign. Now that Manns and Henniger are the only two bigs playing that position seemed to settle down. It certainly is not a strength but it doesn't appear to be the disaster it once was. Henniger has a way to go but he made some nice plays today. Manns is still Manns but you can't have everything. Finally they lost interest at about the 15 minute mark of the 2nd half and got very shall we say casual with how they played. Toledo never got closer than 11 but a better team might have made things exciting. I just hope it doesn't carry over to the next road game and we find ourselves in a deep hole 10 minutes into the game. Let's count on Geno not to let that happen.

burden I think this says alot.... "It certainly is not a strength but it doesn't appear to be the disaster it once was. Henniger has a way to go but he made some nice plays today. Manns is still Manns but you can't have everything."
I still wish Johnson, Nealy or Leonard was involved and contributing but hey, they fought through it and found a rotation that works. I am starting to understand why Ford was so tough on, but at the same time patient with Manns. He can get something done...it may not be great, but as you said...its a far cry from December.
Time to watch the Zips and cheer on the Chips!

Henniger is really starting to show me something. I thought he looked really good today, and his comfort level is really rising. You gotta give Coach Ford and his staff credit, with seven new members on the roster, I think he is doing one hell of a job! In a season that I put down as rebuilding, I'm starting to think we can win the MAC title!

One thing I have found lately is that Kent loves to make people regret thinking "rebuilding year" :).

I get that you don't want to show your team you are quitting, but they realistically had no chance down by 13 and it just seemed silly. If he thought a press and foul would work, I would have thought he would have tried it earlier. That strategy when a game is virtually over is what makes me nuts in basketball. It's like icing a kicker or shooter. Ridiculous.

After watching him against Miami, I thought the same thing. Put some time in the weight room and this kid is a legit MAC players. Maybe another Warz?

I can see him red-shirting next season, and bulking up. Him, and Leonard both. Even though, at Henniger's rate of development, Geno may have a hard time red-shirting him.

Not many guys just "redshirt" their Soph. season. If it's an injury, that's one thing, but a season to sit out and get stronger isn't very common.

I wouldn't mind seeing Henniger develop a shot along with his body, it's very ugly, even with nobody in his face from the free throw line.

RE: Toledo
As I mentioned once before, Henniger told a reporter a few weeks ago that he has already added 15 to 20 pounds since arriving at Kent. Unfortunately, Nealy's knee woes really messed things up. Ideally, he would be getting the minutes and Henniger would have redshirted, as was originally planned. Yeah, his shot is rather "unorthodox", even ugly, but in HS he was always a "passable" FT shooter and since he will always be playing around the basket, we won't see many shot attempts, other than at the charity stripe, more than a few feet from the hoop. I'm not worried about his being able to put points on the board in the future. The only concern, really, is his body developing into a D I body, and I'm sure like many true freshmen, especially "big men", we'll see that happen from year to year.

RE: Toledo
I agree that Henniger's shot is awkward and in fact, ugly. When I first saw it, I was really concerned. I am not that concerned any longer. I predict that as he gets stronger, his shot will become more conventional. His release is too close to his body and too low. He needs to get the ball above his head and then release. The way he is shooting, it is a sign that his strength is not adequate because it takes more strength to shoot with arms extended. A redshirt year will help him a lot. Maybe we can afford to do that next year. In short, Henniger is my type of player and he has big games ahead for us. He is basketball savvy.

Agree, GFlash68, and we will probably not see much of it this year, particularly when Greene is also on the floor, but Henniger has a knack for getting the ball in the basket when he has the ball down low. It was no accident that he was second in all-time Stark County history in total career points. Granted, he was usually the tallest player on the court, but he played a strong "big school" schedule in HS. He is a also pretty good at blocking shots or changing shots. We have seen some of that this year.

I did not see him play in high school, but I hear that he hit quite a few from behind the arc. I think that that would surprise most people as it does me.

I couldn't find anything on Henniger's stats from the three-point range. I stand corrected, though. He was "only" 6th all-time in Stark County scoring, and 2nd in his school's history. Number 1 at both Jackson HS and Stark County is Jami Bosley who played three years for the Akson Zips.

RE: Toledo
There were lulls at times offensively, but that is from only making 5 of 19 on 3s. Bump that up to 7 or 8 makes and this is a 25-point win. Also, Toledo threw in a couple 3s midway through the second half to keep it within 15 points.
What I like from the stats is the low turnovers and holding the best player to only 5 shots from the floor. Kent State did such a good job on him at both ends that the 20 minutes he did play were unproductive. Very few teams at the MAC level can beat this team if KSU continues to take away the best scorer as they have done the last three games.
