RE: 2011 Preseason Rankings
sucks NT doesnt have a baseball team.......:( some people on the GoMeanGreen board were guessing the Tony Mitchell announcement would instead be announcing the formation of a baseball team..... i think ill take the 5 star recruit though.... hopefully though we'll see a sunbelt school in omaha one day.

Already happened in 2000. Cajuns finished 3rd overall.

Should be another very competitive season with multiple tourney bids again.
38. LOUISIANA
50. FAU
58. Troy
66. WKU
74. FIU
95. Ark State
175. Middle Tennessee
177. ULM
182. USA
197. ARk. Little Rock
182 is a terrible ranking for USA. USA has been mediocre the past few years. Heck, we've even had a bad team, but we have still finished no worse than 129. This guy picks us to finish second to last in the Belt? Makes no sense.
RPI - Year
69 - 2010
129 - 2009
99 - 2008
81 - 2007

Well, the way MT has performed the past few years, it's pretty odd to be 7th in conference and 175 overall, even with what we lost from last season.

It's worth emphasizing, with as many things that aren't going well in the conference, the fact that we have so many baseball programs held in such high regard is really nice.
There's no reason we can't raise the stature of basketball and football either.

I agree. The unfortunate thing is that unless you are winning national championships in a sport or making deep runs consistently in tournaments, football is the driving factor as far as "prestige" is concerned and unfairly it seems that the other sports are dismissed. Of course, it doesn't help that there is little coverage of college baseball until the super regionals and the CWS. And then, it is geared towards the BCS conferences as a whole.
There is some damn good baseball played in the SBC.

i dont think UALR will be last. if they get better on the mound they could be really good. good defense last year and are better in the outfield and behind the plate this year with the infield returning. no one should overlook them this year won 5 of 10 belt series last year. just need to keep from being swept in any this year.

I never quite understood this either. Have you ever watched ESPN on a Sunday? BOWLING, BILLIARDS, POKER ETC. COME ON!!!
I understand there are contracts involved and a lot that has to go into it but it needs to be shown more.
It is America's pastime!!

Without pulling up any kind of numbers, I bet regular season college baseball probably barely outdraws bowling and billiards for viewers and I'd bet dollars to donuts that poker outdraws college baseball... and even if baseball were to outdraw them all, I bet the increased production cost of more cameras and larger crews isn't worth it.

College baseball does outdraw a number of college sports. FoxSW, SEC and Comcast all carry college baseball games throughout the season. In Louisiana, CST carries a number of college baseball games besides LSU.
Softball has also grown a larger following, it has surpassed Women's Volleyball as the second most viewed sport behind Women's Basketball.

Again, without pulling up any numbers, my totally uneducated guess would be there are a lot more people involved in softball out there to watch these games than there are people involved in volleyball. So far as I know, there isn't nearly the number of recreational volleyball leagues as there are softball. So through the sheer number of girls who grow up playing softball and parents who coach or umpire, that doesn't really surprise me.
That said, in my opinion, Volleyball is an infinitely better spectator sport and it's only slightly based on the uniforms. I've gone to a few softball games in my day and they can be fun, but when you have two high flying uptempo teams in women's volleyball, I think it's one of the exciting spectator sports out there.

If we are going to start talking uniforms then I demand that every SBC school immediately start a women's beach volleyball team!! Now that would draw some viewers. Hell, we could start our on conference television. Bathe a couple of those FIU dancers and bring them to my room!!

Sand Volleyball is on the NCAA emerging sports list, with play expected to begin in the 2011/2012 year. I've heard rumors that some SBC schools are considering adding and with the success this conference(primarily MT, WKU and FIU) has had in Volleyball in recent years, why not?
