There is something you are missing: Yes, some of my longest running friends were my fraternity bros, but there were also some that I wouldn't even spit on if they were on fire. Basically, you bought nothing.
Indeed, fraternities are a microcosim of the real world. This exposure to different types of people is one of the benefits. Imagine trying to lead and motivate poeple to accomplish group oriented goals and you are not paying them. Every fraternity has some rotten apples. Currently, we have an ex member serving a life sentence in state prison.

BTW, I am posting on here using my blackberry so sometimes when I am typing sentences, the software changes it, which is why some of my words don't make any sense. For example, the previous post of mine, I typed us and it replaced it with is.

That is interesting. When I first got to UAB it was always between Delta Sig and TKE. We (Delta Sig) won the President's trophy year after year. Pi Kaps were down when I was there. Their house burned down during my freshman year and it took some time to recover (my room mate was a Pi Kap). Theta Chi's were gaining when I left. ATO and Lamda Chi were both about dead.

We lost our house after I left and I believe that it really hurt us. Good to see that they have made a comeback.
i was also a delta sig...pi kaps were starting to come on in my early years and were quite solid by the time i graduated...DSP fell on some hard times, but from what ive heard, have been doing quite well lately

RE: Greek system
Like MC Blazer, I to was a TKE...91-93 anyway. Early 90's were pretty greek friendly. There was a lot of talk about a Greek Row, but the school pretty much shut down that notion. To much liability.

TKE was freaking fantastic until we sold the house to Healthsouth and preceeded to have a "Tear Down the House" party since they were going to bulldoze it for a parking lot. We literally tore it down and even made CNN. Once the house was gone, the local chapter was too. About half of us got tired of hanging out at the Homewood Armory and the Cedar's Lodge so we bailed.

ATO, Pi Kap, Theta Chi, and Delta Sig were the other horses at the time. Met some friends that I consider "lifers" from those days and it was a great, childish, drunken experience. We were truly Animal House and the stories will last a lifetime.

We used to actually ride the gurney!! Then the lawyers came.

But it's so much more than that and it's impossible to explain it if you aren't in it.

I just didn't have time. Between the Honors Program (where I made several lifelong friends), the Blazer Band (ditto) and working in Student Publications (again, more lifelong friends), my time was booked. Plus, I worked a full-time job.

Yeah I know what you mean, I was a full time student, worked a full-time job, a part time job on the week ends and National Guard duty and just barely had time to join my fraternity.
I never bought a buddy. Like stated earlier, it's some people in my fraternity who I still don't like to associate with. so if I bought them I need to know where the receipt is so I can take them back and get a better brother.

But to each his own.

RE: Greek system
There is a Forums site for the Pi Delta chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon at UAB.

forums.uabtke.com

The greek system at UAB is slowly making it. Only four Fraternities and four Sororities, and still no real support from the University.

RE: Greek system
is Andy Marsh still there?

Maybe if UAB got rid of him and inserted someone who truly cared then the Greek system can grow and prosper.

RE: Greek system
I rushed and pledged Pi Kappa, but didn't stick with it. I couldn't afford it for one and I got into enough trouble on my own (including nearly being kick out of UAB...me and my good friend Jack!). Being Greek is not for everyone, not that it is bad to be greek. It has its good points, but I enjoyed being a GDI.

Even though I am not a huge Greek supporter, there needs to be a greek row. I remember when the DGs had the "house" in one of the family units on campus by Blazer and University dorm. I seem to recall a soccer player or two getting busted from dropping water balloons on them in '96-'97 when i lived in blazer i think. Weren't the Alpha Xi's in a condemned building near Camp Hall for a while?

I wouldn't knock Andy Marsh. I have worked with him for a number of years (since '95) and that man has done more for the students than just about anyone else. I say that being one who has been on his good side and on his bad side many times (see above about nearly being kicked out). If it wasn't for Andy and his crew in student programs, you wouldn't have half the things happening that you do now. From my understanding he is also one that was able to keep a few of the Greeks alive (some of you know what that is about).

Your last sentence is more accurate than most would believe.

You make yourself sound smart; why did you need a full time job if you had at least two scholarship opportunities (band and honors)?

I made some of my best friends after working within my fraternity (Delta Sig). I didn't have to work a full-time job; my scholarship paid for my expenses. I graduated Summa *** Laude and managed more than $100,000 in my time as chapter treasurer. This combo catapulted me to a top ranked employer. You cheated yourself.
