For money. It's all about money. And, for Arkansas and LSU, it would open Texas recruiting door wider.

RE: San Jose Mercury: Houston & SMU happy in CUSA
MWC board is suggesting that desire to cut travel costs, championship game, and TV markets are driving the move to 12.

It also so seems, based on articles and MWC board speculation, that San Diego State and Fresno State are the schools pushing hardest for expansion. My theory is that those two (and possibly a few others, such as Hawaii) are pushing for San Jose State and one other, as they know that leaving San Jose State in the WAC is a death sentence. San Jose State also has the market going for them. If MWC goes to 12, I think they are a lock.

UTEP is a bit of a wild card...they do have some traditional rivals in the MWC, and the MWC could be viewed as more stable if teams bail for the Big East....but I don't think CUSA is in danger of losing more than one team in the next few years. CUSA might very well remain at the current 12. Unless the MWC can pull together a great TV deal, I don't see UTEP biting.

If it happens, it is going to be San Jose State and Utah State. The remaining five (Idaho, New Mexico State, Texas State, Texas-San Antonio, Louisiana Tech) are probably screwed. They need to pray the MWC votes against expansion next Monday.

I think it will soon get more interesting because both the B12 and Big East will go to 12, also, that means 5 schools will be raided. Question is who will the B12 raid? CUSA, WAC, Big East and will they add BYU? 04-cheers

If Arkansas and LSU wanted access to Texas they could call up Texas schools n BCS conferences the Big 12 and Big East and get non-conference games.

People need to get over this inferiority complex the Big 12 isn't going to be able to raid us we might raid them. After everything that has happens this summer I hope Utah State does get a MWC invite.

The MWC has almost 0% chance of grabbing a CUSA west school. Any Cusa west school is going to take a pretty big $$$ hit moving there. The MWC can take from left over Wac or stand pat. That being said the BE can get any CUSA school it wants. Barring a bcs invite, any cusa school is happy to be where they are today.

The MWC is surely less appealing for those schools than it was 6 months ago. Basically, you just have Boise State.....maybe you give Nevada some credit but that is it. Why go to all the trouble for the move just to play UNLV instead of Memphis?

How would it remove them as candidates? We took TCU from the MWC. Surely if we invited SMU and Houston they would drop the MWC, which is weaker now than it was when TCU left.

I think that is correct. However, it is a moot point because Houston will not be going to the MWC regardless. Looks like SMU feels the same way.

True it probably wouldn't but I was answering the question "Why is this on the Big East Expansion board?"

I would imagine if the BE was looking at Houston right now and Houston just went ahead and accepted an invite from the MWC....the BE would probably move on to UCF or ECU or Temple.

In theory you are correct....the BE could turn around and invite Houston after the MWC .....but with the egos out there.....I doubt they would....the BE would have expected Houston to WAIT for their invite. I don't think they want sloppy seconds if you will.

Agreed. CUSA west is currently a great situation for a Texas school.

One thing that is being left out of this thread is that the MWC needs at least 1 Texas school badly. 03-idea Since TCU joined the MWC, the school in that conference filled up their football rosters with Texas high schoolers. I heard it reported that every team in the MWC at least had 25% of there player from Texas. 04-jawdrop Losing TCU will hurt them in many ways but will hurt recruiting the most. 03-weeping

All that being said, maybe Texas-San Antonio is an option for the MWC. They need to get at least 1 Texas school. 02-13-banana

Do they? Let's not pretend that a conference with plenty of stops in Cali has to ignore that gold mine of sorts. Fresno helps that since they at least draw and are a name for the MWC now and San Jose couldn't hurt that, either, despite not really having a following in either revenue sport.

Boise and Nevada gets a tons of Cali kids. It may be time to recenter recruiting in the conference anyway.

Besides, having UTSA pretty much kills any faint AQ tie-in hopes.

Two words.....

Baghdad Bob!!!!!

What else would a school currently in a conference say prior to having an invite in hand?

Not saying that UH, SMU, or any other school is 100% in but come on. This is just more lip service.

I could see SJSU getting the same arrangement as Hawaii: Football in the MWC, all other sports in the Big West. Then the MWC would have 12 for football and 10 for other sports, which makes more sense than having 11 for other sports.

no one in the Bay Area cares about San Jose State; they haven't had a winning team in lord knows how long

their overall athletic department sucks big time; they're two steps away from dropping to FCS; they should drop to FCS and maybe that way they'll win some games
