The State of Steve post OOC
The State of Steve post OOC

I, like most, enjoyed the really great out of conference schedule this year. I wish we could have won more games but the lack of average level SBC post players killed us. Hopefully, WN and others will push us over the edge next year.

This year however, the league is down and the lack of post players should not hold us back in conference play. Bails should be able to more than hold his own against the bulk of what the SBC has to offer. Kibi being out hurts because he has been matched up with much larger players for the whole OOC season but in SBC play would have had better stats.

If we had WN, Vint and the other bigs that are coming next year would we have fared better? Probably but the lack of pg play kills us just as bad as the lack of big man play.

I have expectations from here and I don’t want excuses about the talent that has been recruited or the other teams being better than UALR. Steve and company recruited every player we have on the team at this point, so any short comings about talent is on them. We have played enough games that the kids should know what they are doing by this point. So, here is what I expect:

1. I expect us to move with purpose in our half court offense. I don’t expect to see 20 seconds of dribbling above the 28 foot mark trying to get set only to end up with a one on one at the 13 second mark. If that is the offense just go to it from the beginning. The lack of being able to get into the sets falls on bad coaching or on the lack of a true pg. Either way, this rests on Steve and the coaches shoulders.

2. I expect sound fundamentals. I don’t expect our bigs that can’t score to be just as lacking in basketball IQ that they don’t know where to position their selves on post entry passes. Joe Kliene made a living in the NBA by knowing how to guard the post. In the second half of the St. Bonnie game we miss played the post and the kid just ate our lunch. Sure he will probably play in the NBA but you still have to get him to shoot over you not just pass the ball drop step dunk.

3. I expect to see the press a lot more to make of for our lack of size. We knew we were out manned last night. Let’s go down swinging rather than just bind over.

4. I expect improvement from week to week. I don’t care about how many we win, if I can see a future in the current players.

I don’t want any excuses (which I have never heard Steve give). I want results. We can be in the hunt this year. We can be one of the top three teams in the SBC this year. The league is damn near a church league this year. I expect to make it to the finals this year or go out in a close game in the semifinals.

Anything less than that and I want change. If that costs us some players, then so be it. We are losing fans. UALR is a one of about 350 D1 coaching jobs. The small mindedness of thinking we can’t hire a coach as good as the ones we have had is crazy. We are a cherry job. We have great facilities and can be a winner.

That is entirely reasonable. Asking very little, really.

Well said. Abysmal recruiting of undersized juco posts and "defensive specialists" as well as relying on a complete stable of 6'0 guards has gotton us into this mess. I am excited about our 2 HS recruits and WN for next year but WHY did it take 8 years to recruit some legitimate size? Gus and Bails are the only people Steve has gotton on campus that are 6'9. At one time we had 6'10 Yancey, 6'9 Eason and 6'9 Holden on the same team. It CAN Be Done!

Good post. The good old rule of thumb of a good offense is that no one player should dribble the ball more than 3 to 5 seconds once the ball crosses half court. Unless you trying to run out the clock. You have a better chance to score if you keep passing the ball. Even good scorers know or should be taught dribble pass get open to get the ball and then score. It seems our players are not taught this. They just dribble dribble dribble with everyone standing and looking then the dribbler finally drives the ball. We might as well let our other 4 guys just stay at the other end of the court. I caught a little bit of the game on the TT and Tucker and Vint were critical of Solo being selfish on a couple of plays. But it is up to Shields to get the players to pass the ball around and move with a purpose.

Gee. And I thought I was the only one who ever noticed and commented on this. Well, others have commented, but not usually on the board. Someone said Solo was appropriate nickname.

I'm glad someone other than Doc and myself have noticed that.

RE: The State of Steve post OOC
Thanks Trojan. I didn't want to mention you without your permission. I figured if you wanted to comment on things that we've discussed it would be up to you and not me to comment on them. Little Rock Alum has hit the nail on his head. One or two players standing out front dribbling, dribbling, dribbling, just looking for a chance to drive to the basket and draw a foul or possibly make a basket. As someone recently told me, that if they wanted to see that kind of basketball they could go down to the Boy's Club or the YMCA every day and watch that for free. I can look at this team and see that there are factions within the team. This existed on some of our teams before. Some hot dogs trying to be the stars and not playing as a team. And this creates bad feelings among the other players. It's not like this is a secret and we don't want to say it out loud because we wouldn't want to hurt someone's feelings. It's plain as day. Every fan in the arena can see it, and a number of them have commented on it to me, so I'm sure there are a lot more who don't like the way things are being handled. I recall that someone said that Vince Lombardi treated every player the same. "Like a dog". Funny statement, but if you have different treatment for different players, it doesn't make for winning teams.

Reggie Fondren is our other recruit. Is he high school or juco? I believe he's high school, but I can't recall at the moment.04-cheers

Juco. I saw him play against Arkansas Baptist College here in Little Rock in November.

Thanks. I know he was considered one of the better high school players in Memphis. Of course we old timers recall signing the player of the year out of Memphis and he only lasted one season.
