Congrats to UConn. Now I hope I never have a channel cut away from football for women's basketball ever again for the rest of my life. Just ridiculous that ESPN feels the need to force feed it down people's throats on ESPN during a live bowl game when the game is on freaking ESPN2.
Just avoid Sportscenter the rest of the evening and I'm home free!

Can't believe they finally lost. My dad and I were just talking about how impressive it is (despite our lack of a love for basketball let alone the women's game) considering they were mowing down Top 15 teams to do it. Congrats on holding the all-time record in college hoops!

Geno's probably OK with it, he said as much after the 2010 final when he thought they'd lose early in the season. Still no one in the Big East likely to get too much in the way, however.

UConn made women’s basketball relevant. Let hope, they can make college football relevant in New England too other than Notre Dame.

Losses to Stanford bookended this streak, just like losses to Notre Dame bookended UCLA's streak. Oddly enough, there are a lot of similarities to both streaks... That's a crock, dude. Tennessee made inroads for women's basketball long before UConn arrived on the scene...

But you never hear anything about it because the media coverages were not there. UConn women brought a lot of attention and people look up history of women’s basketball to see how they fit in history.

The media was there. How do you think TV got interested in women's basketball? They wanted to find out what 20,000 people in Tennessee were watching whenever the Lady Vols were at home in Thompson-Boling Arena...

ESPN2’s telecast of Stanford’s win over Connecticut was the highest-rated, women’s basketball rating ever for a regular-season game on the ESPN networks. The game, in which Stanford Snapped Connecticut’s record 90-game winning streak, posted a 1.5 metered market overnight rating, according to Nielsen. This surpasses the previous high of Connecticut/Duke from Feb. 1, 2003 (1.4). The last 15 minutes of the telecast earned a 3.1 rating.

you don't think that part of the reason they got so much national coverage was because espn (which was started in part for alumni of uconn to be able to watch their teams and also just happens to be based out of connecticut) gave them that much coverage? compared to espn's current sports properties, women's basketball rates just slightly above the irl.
the irl (if they're lucky) rates about a 0.4. they average a .25. no one cares about women's basketball.
i'm not bagging uconn here though. winning 90 straight is impressive. but during that time, the competition nationally really hasn't been there and i think even the uconn fans could admit that much. its pretty easy to win 90 straight when relatively speaking you are a college team and the vast majority of your competition is similar to a jv middle school team.
