Beatty and McMichael out at WVU
It looks like WR Coach Lonnie Galloway may escape with his job. Although with Holgorsen taking over after this weekend, it's still not a certain thing. We'll find out more about the offensive staff shakeup later...
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Wrote:Shakeup on WVU football staff continues with 2 firings
Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Thursday, December 30, 2010

Two West Virginia University football coaches --- Chris Beatty and Dave McMichael --- were today informed their contracts would not be renewed for next season, as a shakeup facilitated by athletic director Oliver Luck, in office since June, continued.

Beatty, the running backs/slot receivers coach and director of recruiting, and McMichael, the tight ends/special teams coach, become the third and fourth members of the staff --- all on the offensive side of the football --- to be terminated at the end of this season in which the Mountaineers went 9-4, losing Tuesday to North Carolina State in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

Offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen and offensive line coach Dave Johnson were both also fired, but notified before the bowl game.

The sweeping changes are part of a succession plan hatched by Luck for head coach Bill Stewart, who is to serve as head coach for one more season. Dana Holgorsen, the current offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, will serve as the offensive coordinator at West Virginia next season and then be elevated to head coach starting in 2012. Holgorsen begins work for the Mountaineers on Monday and has the latitude, even during his year as offensive coordinator, to make many, if not all, of the staff decisions in terms of the offensive staff.

Really, Stew should just offer to settle up his contract for next season and retire right now. In what sense are you the 'head' coach if your OC controls these things?

It's posse, Stookey, and we'll find out more about it next week...

Unless, of course, you were deliberately misspelling it to make it look more like p-u-ssy...

Doing it piece-meal is going to end up a hot mess. Big mistake, Mr. Luck.

RE: Beatty and McMichael out at WVU
I think it was done piece meal due to the news media getting hold of the info on Stew and Mullen. However, doing it this way minimized the psychological blow on the incoming recruits, who by now have had a chance to see what kind of offense they're going to get a chance to play in, and it's helped keep this class together so far...

IMO Oliver Luck hit a home run with this hire. You guys should find that out next fall, if Holgorsen's history holds true to form...

After Stewart's tenure as head coach is over is he suppose to move to some other position within the W. Va athletic dept?

Yes, i can't argue with the logic of the move. Got to give Stewart some credit though for going along with it in a classy manner. It's hard to escape the perception that he's being a bit emasculated here, and lots of coaches in his position would throw a hissy fit, but he's not.

I was very suprised to see Beatty get fired. I guess I thought he would be kept for recruiting purposes, but I think most agree Beatty has been a disaster as a position coach.

As for Stewart, I think he was kept for two reasons. First, to give DH time to get vh
is feet wet in the state. Bill is very good at dealing with the media, donors and fans on those trips around the state in the summer. Secondly, if there are struggles next year then Stewart will gt much of the blame and DH can get thos first year growing pains out of the way with fewer attacks from fans and media

RE: Beatty and McMichael out at WVU
Beatty wasn't that great a recruiter, Jackson. Just about every really good recruit he got to commit to WVU went elsewhere. After 3 years of work, the only recruits Beatty has brought in that have panned out are Shawne Alston and Trey Johnson. Quinton Spain will probably take over one OT spot. But you'd think a recruiting specialist would have brought in more than 3 contributing players in 3 years. Holgorsen should be able to bring in almost anybody and match that performance, even if they have no eastern contacts...

I wasn't in favor of keeping him. After all, he's the RB coach, and his RBs had fumblitis, which is the one of the biggest reasons why we lost most of the games we lost during Stew's tenure...

RE: Beatty and McMichael out at WVU
I was hoping Galloway would be kept. He seems to be the coach that most of WVU's incoming recruits enjoyed talking to most during the recruiting process. In the stories I see about new recruits on WVillustrated.com or EerSports.com the kids mention that Coach Galloway is the one feel most comfortable with and confide in. IMO, he was responsible for more recruits than anyone after Doc Holliday left for Huntington...

MCT REGIONAL NEWS
By Drew Rubenstein
The Dominion Post, Morgantown, W.Va.

Dec. 31 - The offensive staff shakeups continue.

WVU football assistant coaches Chris Beatty and Dave McMichael were informed Thursday that their contracts would not be renewed for next season.

WVU athletic director Oliver Luck confirmed the news, adding that wide receivers coach Lonnie Galloway will return with the Mountaineers. Galloway is the only offensive coach not to get fired.

"Coach Galloway will be coaching with us next year, and hopefully for many more years after that," Luck said.

Beatty, the recruiting coordinator and running backs/slot receivers coach, just completed his third season with the Mountaineers, while McMichael, the tight ends coach, was with WVU for just one year.

Beatty and McMichael mark the third and fourth WVU offensive coaches to be let go this month. WVU also announced offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen and offensive line coach Dave Johnson would not be retained after the Champs Sports Bowl, as incoming offensive coordinator and head coach "in waiting" Dana Holgorsen will have control over the personnel on WVU's offensive staff.

Holgorsen coached his final game with Oklahoma State in a 36-10 win against Arizona, in Wednesday's Alamo Bowl. Holgorsen, who is expected to officially start work with the Mountaineers on Monday, now has three assistant coaches to hire. Luck said no additions had been made as of Thursday evening. However, it is believed Stephen F. Austin offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and Arizona co-offensive coordinator /offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh are two potential candidates to join Holgorsen's staff.

"We're talking to a lot of people," Luck said.

All four WVU defensive coaches -- Jeff Casteel (coordinator), David Lockwood (cornerbacks), Steve Dunlap (safeties) and Bill Kirelawich (line) have been asked to stay on staff, and Luck said that it appears all will return.

"We want them to return. They've done a marvelous job," Luck said. "I've talked to coach Casteel several times."

Luck said he spoke with Bill Stewart a couple times Thursday morning and that the Mountaineers are moving forward with their plan that calls for Stewart to serve as head coach for one more season before Holgorsen takes over, in 2012.

"Nothing has changed. The bowl result, a 23-7 loss to N.C. State, does not change anything," Luck said. "We're moving forward as we planned. I don't anticipate that changing."

WVU's assistants just completed the first year of their two-year rolling contracts, so Luck said Mullen ($241,582), Johnson ($241,582), Beatty ($200,000) and McMichael ($200,000) will be paid their base salaries for next season although they won't be coaching with the team.

Beatty and McMichael could not be reached for comment Thursday.

There's another $900K down the toilet. But IMO, the end result was well worth the cost. I'm sure Ollie feels the same, or he wouldn't have made the decision. He knew all this prior to his decision...
