If you are suggesting that Steve Spurrier is the reason USF shouldn't play UCF, then I agree. I cannot think of any reasoning that would be more clear.

RE: Why USF shouldn't play UCF.
Makes perfect sense to me. Why would USF or UCF want a bitter rivalry that sells out stadiums every time they play and is so intense that it draws attention to both schools even when they aren't playing each other? It's ludicrous to think that that would be mutually beneficial. 03-banghead

Actually, I understand USF's position. It's important for them to maintain what makes them unique. Right now, they're one of 4 BCS schools in Florida. If UCF becomes number 5, then USF loses part of what makes it different from UCF.

More importantly, though, is the issue is state funding. As a BCS school, USF recieves greater exposure and is therefore in a better position to recieve state funding. If promoted, UCF would likely recieve greater state funding than it already does, which would in turn hurt USF. Yes, football does impact state funding. It's crazy, but true.

Adding UCF may lead to greater revenue in football for both schools, but that amount is negligible when compared to the state funding at stake.

While good points, I don't think they have much to do with the OP. OP I assume was arguing against USF having a brutal rivalry like what UF and FSU have. I wasn't arguing that USF should want UCF in the BE as a rival, only that UF and FSU have an enviable rivalry.

But yes, if I were USF, I would do everything in my power to keep UCF out.

I'm glad to see that Knight fans aren't naive about all the factors involved. When people are aware of all the obstacles in their path, they stand a better chance of overcoming those obstacles and achieving their goals...

I think what he is driving at is that an Orlando paper isn't writing about UCF, but about Florida St & Spurrier when he was at Florida. In other words, UCF isn't the main kid on the block even when that block is in Orlando. It is over shadowed by the bigger kids in the state ( Florida St & Florida), even in UCF's home town. I think he believes that USF should just play Florida & Florida St & not bother with UCF.

RE: Why USF shouldn't play UCF.
The point that I was trying to make (and I really need to stop drinking while posting) is that Florida legitimized FSU by playing them as a rivalry. In the 1960's UF was to FSU as Miami is to FIU. This quote says a lot.

"Two years earlier Spurrier and the Gators lost to Florida State for the first time. Some longtime Florida State supporters still remember what the Gators had stuck on their helmets in practice in the days before that game: "Never, FSU, Never."

The message implied mighty Florida could never – and should never – lose to the likes of lowly Florida State, once a women's college that didn't begin playing football until 1949. That was the environment in which Spurrier arrived in Gainesville. And that was the attitude some say he carried to Florida when he became the coach there in '90."

I have no dog in this hunt, but it makes sense that USF would not want to play UCF as they are much closer in talent level than those 50-60's UF/FSU teams. Playing and beating UF gave FSU legitimacy and dominance in the state which UF never really re-established until this decade.

Your username is perfect. The State of Florida does not prescribe university funding on the basis of being in a BCS conference or anything similar. All education & general funding (i.e., instruction, university operations, etc.) are formula driven based on # of FTE enrolled. Each university has some unique programs that receive funding outside of this formula, but there is no allocation by the Legislature that goes to a school based on it being perceived as the better school, being in a better athletics league, or any other sort of arbitrary nonsense.

This... UCF likely already recieves greater state funding because of it's size.

That's correct, depending on what you count and how. The bulk of university allocations are based on FTE. There are some other programs, such as IFAS, which fulfills UF's land-grant responsibilities, and USF conducting Phosphate Research that are funded separately through either general revenue or via a trust fund for a specific purpose. Then the medical schools are funded separately with UF and USF getting the lion share of that money at the moment as the two old medical schools while FSU, UCF, FIU, and now FAU are still in the beginning phases. But none of this is decided at all based on the university's perception or being in a BCS conference or any sort of similar nonsense.

Well, yeah, they can't come out and say it's because of football. That'd just be crazy. It's not like they'd come out and say "well, you play football, so here's a bag of money."

Politicians always find a way.

If the moron is talking about politics in Texas, he's right. There are a couple other states where this could apply as well. Never underestimate the ability of people to do stupid things...
