Matt is heating up.
He is shooting only 32.1% from the arc for the season, but in the last four games he is 10 of 23 for 43.5%.

At the risk of sending Dr, J's blood pressure up, I'll point out again that he was 4-4 in the last 2'29" of the past 2 games- when the games were over and nobody was guarding him. We need him to hit shots when they still matter.

RE: Matt is heating up.
Granted. But at least it indicates that his stroke is back. He has been there before and things are starting to come around.

My blood pressure is fine, but you can't score when you're not in the game. If he was playing 25 minutes a game and not scoring, I'd concede you have a point. And there were people guarding him. We weren't that far behind and when he hit those shots we pulled within a possibility of getting back in the game. Slim I'll admit. But he can't help the team playing 9 minutes a game. If Steve wants to keep losing to prove a point, which he seems to be doing, then so be it. It's his job on the line. I just hate to see a kid, a senior who's gone through the wars, who has the talent to score points from the perimeter, riding the pine. Never gets to start. Very disrespectful on our coach's part. Under any other coach, under the same circustances, he'd be playing a minimum of 25 minute a game. He played nearly that as a sophomore walk on on one of our best teams in years.

Now I'll give you something to chew on. If you go back to Matt's sophomore season, he started a lot of games, and was one of our leading scorers. If you take the D1 games we won when he started, and then compare the D1 games we've won since Solo got here and began starting, I'd bet Matt has won nearly as many games starting as Solo. Now keep in mind that Solo has started many more games than Matt, so I don't expect it to be even, but the thing is he's proven he can do it at crunch time. He just hasn't had the chance to do it much this year.04-cheers

True, we need Matt to hit shots when the game is close. Normally he doesn't even get in the game until it's out of hand. At least give the kid credit for hitting the shots when he does. It seems like some of you don't want to give Matt credit for anything. If it hadn't been for Matt hitting those shots at the end, the score would have really been ugly.

One thing. When he goes in, we're usually double digits behind. And he can't do it by himself. I don't really know why they jerked him out of the game so quick, when it was ages before they even put him in. If he lost his man on defense or missed a shot or two, so what. The whole team does that all the time. I'd rather have a kid who isn't a great defensive player, but can score, then one who can't play defense and can't score. We have a number of those playing extended minutes.

Here's what I really think. Coach is saving Matt as a secret weapon. If opposing coaches don't get to see him play and his scoring per game isn't great, they'll overlook him, and then when coach starts playing him the whole game, he'll just overwhelm the opposition with his shooting.
Yeah. That's the ticket.04-bow

RE: Matt is heating up.
My thinking is that Shields didn't recruit Matt, and when he plays Matt ahead of many of his own recruits, as he's had to ever since Matt walked on, it makes his recruiting ability look bad.

I think what's making Steve look bad is that he's leaving his best proven 3 point shooter sitting on the bench for 31 minutes out of 40 when the team is getting their brains beat in. I guess he's saving him for garbage time.03-puke03-puke03-puke

Bob, you don't really believe the "fell off the turnip truck" story, do you? Whatever stories you may hear, he came here as a "recruited" walk-on. He is now on scholarship. I don't believe any coach would not play a particular player, if he believed that player gave him the best chance at winning. The only thing that makes Steve's recruiting look bad is not winning. We are diehards. I don't how many of your average folks at our games know or care that he originally did not have a scholarship.

I was talking to someone today who told me the only reason he occasionally comes to games is to see Matt play. When he isn't playing, he has no interest in watching the Trojans. He is a former player with a very good knowledge of the game, and he can't believe that Matt's not getting the majority of playing time as a senior who can really shoot the ball when the team continues to struggled with shooting.04-cheers

Are we talking about a former UALR player? Who comes to a game to see one kid play other than the kid's mom or dad? Maybe his brother? Last time I checked it was a "team" sport. I guess I might buy a ticket to see MJ, Kobe, or Fish but that's about it.

Let's be honest. Who has always been the crowd favorite every since he's been here. Other than parents and we hard core fans, I'll bet the majority of the fans, if asked who their favorite player was, would pick Matt. We've seen what he can do when Steve gets off his back and turns him loose. 27 against ORU. 24 against FIU in Miami year before last. That's why he hits shots in garbage time. Steve is desperate, and allows him to shoot when he's open and not have to worry about being pulled out of the game. If he would just allow him the shooter's respect, we'd win some games we wouldn't win otherwise.

I'm not saying he's the savior of the program. But I don't know anyone else on the team who has ever shown the capability of putting up really big number than Matt. But the best shooter in the world can't score sitting on the bench.

I don't know when Steve is going to wake up and face the fact that he's done his best to break the spirit of a kid who has given this program more than anyone I can think of. I don't know of another kid who would have paid his own way, gone through what he's gone through for our program, and been treated with less respect by a coach. Didn't even start him last year in Jonesboro when we played ASU. Matt always gets a big spread in the paper when we come to play ASU. Doesn't get that respect here. I'm sorry, but it's disgusting to me.03-puke03-puke03-puke

No, you know the "turnip truck" story, a comment made by a Oral Roberts fan. He may have been a "recruited walk-on", but the fact remains, several guards were signed and left during this time, and Matt out lasted and out played them all. For two years he had no scholarship, while scholarship money was pissed down the drain on guards who couldn't carry Matt's jock.

Now, I'm not quite as high on Matt as Doc is, but I do believe he needs to play more, and when the Trojans are still in the game. And, if you really like him as you say, why are you always running him down, such as, "he hits three 3's during garbage time". At least he hit some shots during garbage time. No one else did. It made the score look a little better.

At the same time, I'm not quite as high on the "saviour" as Shields and some of you are. I believe he's the "pet", and seems to be able to do no wrong with Shields and some of you guys. He's a good Sun Belt player. Nothing more. I still contend he's not a "team" player. He likes himself more than the "team." I believe he spells 'team' with an I in it. That's just my opinion, and I could be wrong in both cases.

Here's an interesting stat. Points per minutes played by our point and 2 guards. Solo, .44, D'Andre, .26, Chucky,.35 and Matt, .43. Not bad for a kid who hasn't had nearly as many chances to perform as the others.
Hopefully that will change. Three games in three days, I look for Matt to get more playing time, if for no other reason that the other kids legs are getting tired.04-cheers

How about for the usual reason when he goes in, we're down by double digits, and Shields can't get ahold of the Marines.

Unfortunately, it is a business. Didn't notice you shed any tears when Kiki (former freshman of the year) and DeAndre (former starter) were run off as seniors. I guess if Steve could have found enough better players Matt would be gone too. Instead, at least for the time being, Chucky has pushed him down the bench some. No reason to feel sorry for him. He needs to hit a few shots, when the game is still in doubt, and I guarantee you his minutes will shoot up. Current, not past, production is what will get Matt more playing time.

That's my point Mickey, he hasn't been able to recruit any players, or at least enough better players to get rid of Matt, or I'm sure he would have. I've heard you say that you don't believe a coach should do that, but I don't have a problem with a coach doing it. It's his neck on the block, so I'd do the same thing if I were a coach.

RE: Matt is heating up.
I just can't wait till he graduates so we don't have to go through this crap every other day. Doc is right, he's a great shooter. MJS is right also, he's not the second coming of Christ, either. Can't we just be done with this? We have 12 other players on our team, you know!
