RE: Cam's Day!!
Screw Cam Newton.

Newton isn't worthy to carry Pat Sullivan's jock strap.

RE: Cam's Day!!
i was using this topic to address all of the ways athletes are indeed paid... i think, in the era of we have our own tv network to give players exposure, all of these free luxuries given to players far outweighs a little cash handed now and again -- who cares about extra benefits when coaches are making huge sums of money and can retire easily at 46 and live in monoco if they so choose..

now steroid use i do have a problem with - but that is something we struggle to police even in high school - it actually does give players an unfair advantage over players doing it right...

if cam got 200k how did that make him a better athlete?? now if your school can afford dr andrews and and million dollar medical services and another can't, then that could give you an unfair advantage and is perfectly legal...

seems to me it is not a level playing field at all - so let the market pay what it would like...

THAT is the point of the post - not all this UAB/SEC rivalry stuff... i am a UAB grad and have been very involved in athletics and am for UAB - just thought this would be an interesting discussion amongst college sports fans...

Oh, I dunno, people with ethics? The ones that think that cheating is cheating? Would it have been ok for the guy in line ahead of you for his diploma to cheat his way to it while you had to work and study hard?

Add in that not all programs have a Bobby Lowder type to pass out cash to get the players he wants and you get a heavily tilted playing field. When you let the money loose in sports you get the Yankees and Red Sox who can afford nearly anyone they want versus the Kansas Citys of the world, who get bent over.

College sports are at least attempting (kinda) not to let the money overrun the game. When they do, you get abortions like the BC$, a deliberate cartel intended to corner the money and power for themselves. That's not healthy, not unless you are one of the haves. We are have-nots in that scenario, do you seriously expect us to think it is a good thing?

what i am saying is it is not a level playing field and will never be --- the diploma comparison is an individual issue - like i am saying with PEDs.. until nba and nfl allow kids to take what the market will bear - then i am for these guys getting paid... maybe if you put a socialistic restriction on facilities, tv, coaches salaries etc then you would have a level playing field... til then figure some system where they can be paid... it is a business you know -

RE: Cam's Day!!
So, you advocate making the playing field even less level?

You want college sports to be (Insert pro sport developmental league name here), then go pull for the Kentucky men's basketball team.

What about the purity of competition ON THE FIELD.

As if the Tuscaloosa campus doesn't already have every conceivable advantage? You really support breaking out the checkbook to GUARANTEE they'll never lose to Georgia State on homecoming?

Hell, just buy officials while you're at it.

It's just business, and the object is win, right?

it is business and i don't think officials are bought and pd in the nfl and nba... i am saying level the field to make it "ok" to pay money - then you would have coaches who do things right (or close to right) able to compete with those who will "get it done"... i think you would be surprised that the market would not be crazy except for a few kids that go to the big schools anyway - just think we might could dig deep and land 1 "big budget" player /year and throw him in with our normal good players who in the free market would demand very little in terms of pay... you then could compete with the UK's if you have 2 or 3 nba guys on the floor...

RE: Cam's Day!!
It won't solve the problem.

Where do you draw the line to keep the field as level as possible?

Say, $1000 a month.

Then say, UAB can manage that.

What will the "haves" do? They'll pay the kid the allowable $1000, and continue with the additional under-the-table payments, to make sure they get the best players.

Don't cap it at all, you might reply?

Then why bother fielding teams? We already have professional sports leagues.

RE: Cam's Day!!
i am all for both amateur and pro sports --- point being made for nba and nfl to remove the restrictions and allow a kid a chance to make money at his craft if the market will allow him.. as long as they collude with the ncaa and prevent that - then allow them to get unrestricted (caps etc) whatever the market will bear in college - i really believe it would be good money for top 100 players - decent for top 200 and after that kids will come for what they get now...
the "haves" already make this more like the pros than not - and many do pay already - let everyone in on the action..

btw: highschool football has its own night on espn already - aau ball starts recruiting future stars in grade school.... parents play thousands to go to speed training and "travel" teams... and thats about as "non pro" as you get now days.. and that's probably more serious than major college sports were 40-50 years ago..

i would never want to be a coach who "would not get it done" trying to compete with coaches who "would get it done".. that would make you a sucker...we are all suckers from time to time --- but it just gives you a lot of stress and makes you bitter!!!

I sent a note to Jon Solomon that Cam Newton without the surrounding 4* and 5* teammates was essentially Joe Webb at UAB. Needless to say, he did not agree to the comparison.

He's right (to disagree with the comparison). Cam Newton isn't up to that level.
