Tulsa Post Game
Tulsa post game thoughts

When we dictate pace we are good. When we can’t and the game comes down to a half court game we are not going to fair that well.

Bails is still a key to me. Today when the game slowed to a half court game he has to come in and score in the post. He could have scored against Tulsa’s big guy and maybe got some fouls. Steve gave him his chance and he nearly lost us the game but I still think we are going to have to ride that horse. As we move into SBC play the other team’s bigs will not be as good as what he has had to face so far.

Mouzy played well today and fit well in the minutes he played.

Kibi has to learn to go quick on the taller bigs. Don’t try to shoot over them. Go around them and finish over other side of the goal. They will be forced to move with you and foul.

Courtney hitting 3’s.

Steve has done a great job of moving to the press and letting the team play at a faster clip. I don’t think our big ten style play would work with this team, so I am really proud to see we are playing a style that gives us the best chance to win.

Great win! Bring on Ole Miss.

Hey, you are not overlooking Philander Smith are you? Just because they are 0-12. Just because they were trailing SAU last night 80-36, before losing 89-50. Just because they lost to Henderson State by 31. I'm sure they'll view this as their "Super Bowl". Still, if they can't play DII teams within 30 points we should be able to name our score.

In all honesty DI, when we were down by 15 in the first half, did you think we'd keep it under 30?

No, but I think we can win if we press and force the pace.

There are 10 posters and 60 guesses on the board right now. I think that is the most people I have seen on here.

Honestly, looking at the stat sheet, I would not have guessed we would have won this game. Huge win for this program at this time.

I would have liked to have seen more. The schedule is so good. We need more people and coverage in the paper.

How about some coverage. I'm told Wally was there. How did he know there was a game today? He sure as heck didn't read about it on his sports page. Chris should have picked him up by the seat of his pants and tossed him out the front door as horrible as he's treated our program. Fourth straight game with no game day coverage. A huge article about Oaklawn racing and the season doesn't even start until January 14th. And other articles that should be in USA today, not our local, oh I'm sorry, our statewide paper.03-nutkick

looking at stats
Why did Marlo start and then only play 4 minutes?

Alex plays 22 minutes and does not take a shot.

Tulsa has ZERO steals.

Courtney appears to be back, and we needed him.

Again, positive ATO as a team.

Of course I have no real idea why someone plays the number of minutes they do, but concerning Marlo, maybe the coaches realized very quickly that he didn't match up with the Tulsa bigs. Bails did a few good things while he was in, and even passed the ball out four or five times, which is a record for him. And then Courtney and Kibi had really good nights, so it worked. Different players will get different minutes this year depending on matchups.

Courtney and Kibi are both warriors. They have the quickness and instincts to rebound and score when they're on, and they were definitely on yesterday. If they play like that every game, we can raise our expectations for a good season. We were also a little lucky that Tulsa missed a lot of open 3 point shots. That is what Steve's defense counts on. Make them shoot the 3 rather than the layup if you have a choice.

We had more steals and points off steals than I can recall. D'Andre is quick as a cat, and if a big gets the ball, if he puts it down low for a second he's liable to have it stripped by D'Andre. That's a big plus. Last year we got no easy points. Last night we got several.

Glad to see Matt regaining some of his previous form. Without his team leading eight points in the first half, we would have dropped pretty far behind, and probably gotten down on ourselves and not been able to come back. So he played his role. One thing I've always noticed and disagreed with about Steve's strategy is that when you start a group, and they aren't doing well, but you make some changes that work and you either close the gap or take the lead, and the half ends, it only makes sense to me that you start the combination that was working.
Why would you start the same ones who put you in a hole in the first half? But I've seen him do that for seven years, and I guess he must have a reason. But I'm happy we won, and hopefully we'll win tomorrow night, and go into Saturday's game with Ole Miss with a head of steam and confidence. Wonder if we'll get a game day article in the newspaper? 04-cheers

He definitely started a different line-up the second half. I really can't recall exactly, but I think he may have had Courtney in for Marlo and Chuckie for Alex. Regardless of who started the second half, they certainly turned the game around.
