RE: University of Cincinnati faces $40 million budget gap
I can't speak for UC, but as OSU grad, I'd never donate directly to the school, because of just how much money I've watched it waste while tuition increased a lot. The number of new buildings replacing structures that were older, but severed their purpose, was ridiculous. I know some of it was because money was donated specifically for projects, but that doesn't explain everything. I think the theme is sadly common at a lot of public universities.

I guess we are still trying to pay our way out of all the new buildings, etc. But it just surprises me how the university can burn through so much money.

I would imagine the cost of operating those buildings is enormous, especially the older ones that need constant maintenance and renovation.

Too much non essential staff also drives things up.

Try the newer ones too. The DAAP building is already undergoing a major overhaul. Shortly after it was built I had a conversation with a DAAP professor who called the new building "fragile." I asked then why the University was building all these expensive new buildings when they weren't taking care of the old ones.

The campus is in much better condition now than it was when I had that conversation, but fancy new buildings require significant upkeep, too.

The newer DAAP building was for the most part was designed poorly by Peter Eisenman. There isn't a doubt that UC needed more and newer buildings, especially around the time DAAP was being finished. Some of the newer buildings and projects are great, campus looks great, but they could have spent money much more wisely.
