Box Score
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=303162567

The 1st thing that jumps out at me is the fact that they list the starters at the bigs as kibi and jackson. Was that right? We started a couple of less than 6’6” kids and won the rebounding war by 1? That is really great. I know we came out and pressed with that lineup due to smu not having a pg, which is probably why we went that route.

Bails does not play but neither did Marlo and Montrell. They got 8 minutes between them. Did the match-up zone play into this? I really thought Marlo would play some minutes. Is he hurt? Were BIG bigs a match-up problem?

Leeper, a slim big, played 17 minutes. Anyone at the game care to tell what they saw the defense doing that lead to so few minutes by our kids that should be able to score inside? We won going away, I just want to know how our post game looked.

PG, the guy/williams combo produced tonight. Yes, 12 rebounds by two kids that are less than six foot. Someone was hustling after the ball. I would like to hear from someone that was there about how they ran the offense and looked in transition.

Bozeman’s move to off guard looks good in the box score. I want hear about how he looked on the court. How did he fit into what Shield’s system is downing? The box score seems like it worked for him.

A final thought on recruiting. Jackson was a 3 star and kibi was billed as a producer and they both produced tonight. Leeper was billed a Joe kliene must have, well tonight he played 17 minutes of ball in front of a lot of guys that I thought would play in front of him. The pg’s seem like they are at least better at controlling the ball with only ONE turnover.

A road win at SMU, any road win, is a big deal for a team that could not win last year. We fly out today for a game tomorrow and I bet everyone is giving us a chance to win. That second half was something we have been waiting a year for.

Go Trojans, BURN THE HORSE!

We won't be able to get by with that all of the time.

I am guessing that Leeper is doing what Jake did his first year. He guards their big guy - period.

Bozeman’s move to off guard looks good in the box score.

Might prove to be a genius move.

RE: Box Score
Only one possible redshirt now.

We made our free throws. That will win close games.

It ain't good when a point guard who plays 20 minutes leads the team in rebuonding. That isn't his job.

Mouzy had starters minutes.

If Leeper can average 2 rpg, and assist and a steal for the season, that is a plus. I don't know how much Jake scored his freshman year, but it wasn't much.

When your point guards have only one turnover for the game - look out!

I just get so tired of ALWAYS playing smallball. I wonder if Steve will ever use Leeper, Kibi and Courtney at the same time.

Even then it would be hard pressed to call that a big line up. I'm like you pappy, It's hard to play small at every position. It worked last night and we can enjoy the win but we really need Bails back to give some legitimate size if we have any plans to do something post season IMO

Idon't know a thing, but when I see someone is out "indefintely", I don't have a lot of hope for him contributing a lot to the team. Of course, he could be back for the Wednesday game for all I know, but right now, I wouldn't count on Derrick this year.

I don't think you'll see the last of last night's lineup. The genius is that with Courtney and Kibi, who are both fierce rebounders, and Chucky Guy, who I've seen block a shot by Gus in the pickup games, they can get away with a shorter lineup, especially on offense, and when you have either D'Andre and Chucky, along with Solo and Matt, you have a potentially dynamic scoring unit. You'll recall that when we shifted to defense, Alex came in for Matt several times.

From what I heard on the radio, the substitutions worked pretty well. As far as our guards getting a lot of rebounds, that could be attributed to our big men occupying their men so the guards could get the ball. Just a possibility. And you'll recall me saying that Gus would play a much larger role this season than most of us originally thought. And my original thought was that if anyone redshirted, it would be Sonnier, since we were so deep at his position. At least for now, things are playing out somewhat the way I figured. Of course I had no idea that Derrick would get into trouble. Those things you just can't predict. I hope it wasn't so serious that we've lost another fourth or fifth year player.03-melodramatic

The biggest surprise to me last night was that Marlo didn't play more minutes. Maybe he wasn't feeling well, or maybe it's just that Courtney and Kibi have been playing so well in the scrimmages that the coaches felt we are a better team the way our lineup shook out last night. We won a game that I thought we'd lose, so I have no problems. We can play a lineup of munchkins as long as we win, and I'll be happy.01-lauramac2

Didn't take a genius to figure out Solo is a 2 guard and not a point guard. The genius is that we recruited not one, but two point guards potentially better than any we've had in awhile. Let's give the coaches their due. I think most of us realized this recruiting class was a step up from past ones, and assuming the kids we've recruited this year all make it to campus, this could be another very good class.
Maybe the cycle is heading upwards. Could we possibly win at St. Bonnie? I don't think the most optimistic among us thought we come home 2-0. Well we're halfway there. And at the worst, we'll be 1-1. Not bad for a two game road trip with so many unknowns starting the season.01-lauramac2

Yes, I thought we'd start 2-0. Remember, I decided to take the Dr. J, optimistic approach, this season. I felt really confident about SMU. Flying up to Buffalo and playing again within 40 hours will be tough.

I have to admit I thought we'd lose at SMU. And the way the game was going in the first half, I was really concerned. But give the kids and the coaches their due. That second half was terrifically played.
First step in learning how to win close games on the road. Get the lead, protect it, and make your free throws down the stretch. A formula that never fails to work.04-cheers

I felt we would win. They are really down. The Bonnies are about the same. We have a real chance to go 2-0 to start the season.
