Jim Calhoun on WFAN
Per Mike DeCourcy's Twitter:
Quote:UConn Jim Calhoun on WFAN: "The Big East is talking about it and it's eventually going to happen where you see possibly a separation there"

Anyone hear this and know exactly what Calhoun is referring to? Sounds like an eventual split.

I realize that coaches tend to speak with their hearts and may not have 100% of the information but Calhoun is definitely one I'd give the benefit of the doubt. Interesting development in any case.

IDK. There could be open to interpretation if you asked me IMO. I think it sounds like an eventual split. Guess we gotta find the archives or podcast to find out exactly what he said.

I heard the interview & it sounded to me as if Calhoun was guessing just as much as the rest of us. But clearly the handwriting is on the wall for some kind of change. Everyone knows that.

I hope so, Calhoun seems to be in the loop. Back in 2003 when it looked like Cincinnati might not get in hd said that he and Boeheim would talk to their presidents about.

Obviously this statement can be easily taken out of context.

I almost read it as a possible "split" in terms of creating two basketball divisions if the league does in fact grow to 18-20 basketball teams.

According to someone on the UConn scout site, he was talking about 120 major Div 1 programs (think 1A) leaving behind the other Division 1 basketball (and all other sports) programs. I assume he is referring to Lew Perkin's idea that this will someday happen, which is what Perkins used to convince the CT state government to pay for the football upgrade. And which may be the gun pointing at Nova to upgrade or become Holy Cross.

RE: Jim Calhoun on WFAN
there are too many mid-major teams that make the NCAAs every year for the 120 FBS schools to break away

people like to see the Butlers and the George Masons make runs in the tournament

anyway-that would leave half of the BE out as well; can't see the other teams in the league supporting that idea
