I believe we have the ideas to propel the MAC forward!

I really don't see the MAC doing much of anything with regards to Temple......I don't believe that the MAC will push Temple out with an ultimatum on joining for all sports now that Temple football is back to being decent again. I don't put much stock in the rumors that we'll expand, either, unless Temple signs a longer term football only deal with the conference and the powers to be decide that the unbalanced schedule is causing too much havoc. In that case they may look for a eastern IAA school to move up in football only.

No way Xavier will bring back football at the DIA level, VE. They considered coming back with a DIII approach a decade ago or so, but decided it was too costly. Miami used to play Xavier, Dayton and Cincy ever year for an unofficial championship of the "Miami Valley"....to bad Dayton dropped down and X dropped out in football. UMass or Delaware are probably the best bets if they want to move up in football.

RE: *IF* reports are true about Nova' what should the MAC Do?
Those programs would certainly never want the MAC, and the MAC has made it clear they want institutional commonality among full members, i.e. no privates (other than affiliation for single olympic sports). Realistically, the highest-caliber non-football schools the MAC could draw in would be Cleveland St, Wright St, or Milwaukee. Our leaders know better than introduce the hassle of FB vs BB school opinions.

UMass is wanted by our leaders. Delaware would require the breaking-up of their conference and they have not studied FBS. Charlotte is a good decade from even thinking FBS.

1. Add at least one eastern school or perhaps three schools (JMU, UMass, Delaware...) for all sports

2. Ask Temple to join for all sports

I think if the MAC went to 16 teams and Temple could maintain or build rivalries with eastern football and basketball programs, Temple might be receptive to coming on board with all sports. The MAC plays a relatively light basketball schedule currently (16 MAC games/season?). With programs being able to play 30 regular season games now, there is no reason Temple couldn't play 16 or 18 conference basketball games and fill the rest of the schedule out with national games against their typical out of conference foes. Temple has strong relationships with many basketball programs in the ACC, Big East, SEC, and Big-10.

IMO, the MAC not having a robust eastern presence diminishes Temple's vested interest in becoming a full member of the MAC.

Should they try to mold the confernece in a way to accommodate Temple?

Should they sit still and do nothing?

Should they expand west?

If the MAC was smart it would lure Temple as an all sports member by attracting the likes of Butler, Xavier, Dayton, St. Louis, and Duquesne for all sports except football. I know Duquesne isn't great but adding them gives the MAC one foot in the Pittsburgh market in addition to the St' louis market and an increased presence in the Cincy and Indy markets. If the current football schools are not keen on continuing with 13 football members then swap out Duquesne with someone currently sponsoring football. With 18 teams, every team plays everyone once and a "rival" twice annually. This looks like a pretty solid mid-major basketball conference if you ask me...might be the strongest RPI of any of them on paper if they adopted new scheduling standards like the Sunbelt too:

MAC 18
Ohio
Akron
Kent State
Buffalo
Miami-O
Bowling Green
Toledo
Eastern Michigan
Central Michigan
Western Michigan
Ball State
Northern Illinois
Temple
Duquesne
Dayton
Xavier

Butler
St. Louis

Any thoughts?

Why would those teams find the MAC more attractive than the A-10?

Temple is under no circumstances going to join the MAC for basketball unless the conference as a whole stepped up it's game big time. We have shown no inclination that that is in the works so you can put the Temple joining for all sports notion to bed. It's not happening. If would be completely stupid on their part to do it.

Cherry pick the best of the A-10 and maybe you have something... but then again, the other teams aren't in a pickle like ']['emple is.

Toledo will be leaving the MAC soon, so we will need to even out the divisions. All or nothing for Temple.

No one is likely to be going anywhere, my friends. Temple has an outside shot at re-entry to the Big Least, but I'd say their chances were 25% at best. We either need to jettison Temple, or add a football only playing member to balance the schedules. My guess is the latter.

And why does this matter to the MAC?

It isn't like Temple was likely to get the invite to join the BigEast anyway - and we weren't looking to add Villanova....so how does this affect us?
