MyBB OOC Basketball Schedules - ASun/BigSouth
Looking at the number of sub-Divison I teams on basketball schedules this year in the A-Sun and Big South....

A-Sun: Belmont 0, Lipscomb 1, ETSU 0, Campbell 1, Upstate 0, KSU 1, Mercer 1, JU 1, UNF 0, Stetson 1, FGCU 0

BigSouth: VMI 4, Radford 3, Liberty 3, UNCA 3, Gardner-Webb 2, High Point 2, Winthrop 2, Presbyterian 0, Coastal Carolina 4, Charleston Southern 4

(might not be 100% accurate, but you get the picture)

Let's hope Laing never schedules more than one each season. One is one too many, as far as I'm concerned.

RE: OOC Basketball Schedules - ASun/BigSouth
Sure you do. Most fans are too blind to see how good a team actual is. If your team plays 5 top notch opponents and goes 1-4, most fans think the team sucks. However, if your team plays 3 mediocre teams and two div 2 teams and goes 5-0 everyone thinks the team is great because they are 5-0.

The other reason for scheduling D-2 teams is to save your job. It helps build your win total and makes you look like you know what you are doing as a coach. The higher ups only look at one thing when it comes to hiring/firing someone....how many Ws do you have? (which is the wrong approach)

OC - Wow that's excessive! Maybe the Camels can help them see the light here. It's an RPI killer.

Actually---RPI is not affected at all by playing sub D1 teams---its as if the game isn't played at all.

But I do agree in general that Big South teams schedule too many. Winthrop usually has 1-2 per year and usually has the fewest on anyone, and may have something to do with the fact that we generally improve over the year (and usually win the conference). I think our scheduling of them has more to do with finding opponents to visit our gym more than anything else. No way majors take the chance of visiting and losing after all our big wins over the years and we generally insist on home and homes versus anyone else and that seems to keep other mid-majors away. So we struggle to get home games.

CCU, Chuck South, and VMI tend to be the worst offenders year after year with CCU just making ridiculously easy schedules that is almost humorous.

UNCA usually has a really hard schedule even though they do have 3 on there this year. They will also play 4-5 money games or even more per year.

Good points by MrX and wufan. Nice to hear from a Winthrop fan on this!

I received my season tickets today and that prompts another angle on this. What OOC D-1 schools will the A-Sun and Big South host this year? (In other words, what OOC D-1s can fans enjoy seeing on their team's floor?)

A-Sun:
Belmont - MTSU, Miami (Ohio)
Lipscomb - Austin Peay
ETSU - Tenn Tech
Campbell - Longwood, Western Carolina, UNC Wilmington
Upstate - UNC Asheville
Kennesaw State - Georgia Tech, Chattanooga, Northern Arizona
Mercer - Harvard, Navy, Georgia, Charlotte
North Florida - Furman
Jacksonville - Savannah State, Bethune-Cookman
Stetson - UCF, Savannah State
Fla Gulf Coast - Southeast Missouri State, Miami (Fla), NC Central, IUPUI

Big South:
VMI - Jacksonville State, Longwood
Radford - James Madison
Liberty - George Mason, William & Mary
UNC Asheville - Western Carolina
Gardner-Webb - NONE
High Point - Hampton
Winthrop - Jacksonville
Presbyterian - Jacksonville State
Coastal Carolina - Citadel, East Carolina, NC Central
Charleston Southern - Citadel, Coll of Charleston

G-W couldn't bring anyone into their 5,000 seat arena?

Seems like Campbell has always brought in at least 2 D-1 OOCs, even when we were playing in Carter.

In February, the Big South (all but Coastal....why not the Chants?) will be involved in ESPN BracketBusters. PC, LU, HPU, UNCA, and Winthrop will host in their games. Can Campbell fans look forward to this next year?

G-W has had a lot of issues it seems since entering the league that led to their coach getting canned last year. May have to do with the fact they hired a guy relatively late in the game for this season in terms of putting together a schedule.

I think the Big South is generally requiring (or highly encouraging) everyone to participate in the Bracketbuster. My feelings on it are it can be good/bad depending on the situation. It's great when you are having a really good year---for instance the year we went to the NCAA tourney and beat Notre Dame, we had an 11 seed--getting that seed was helped by beating a really good Missouri State team in the BB, and also was the 7 P.M. ESPN game on Friday night which is great for exposure. However, when you aren't having an outstanding year (say last year for WU, at least until conference tourney time), then you get a game that really doesn't do anything for you since you are playing a similar RPI school and that game gets slotted in the middle of conference play and generally results in playing 3 games in a span of 5 days when the conference games mean much more at that point. This may be mitigated some by everyone participating in the league now, so everyone is in the same situation.

Also note that when you play in the BB, you agree to return the game the following year, so if you are on the road against a quality opponent--you've booked a high profile opponent for next year's home schedule. That's another plus.

In terms of the conference tourney---the Big South plays the games at the higher seed in the first round, and then at the highest remaining seed for the last two rounds. There are pros and cons---pros are that it rewards the best team over the course of the regular season and ensures a packed house for T.V. and general excitement (versus some leagues which do it at a neutral location and the place is 20% full for the majority of the tourney). The cons is that some of the Big South venues are tiny like CCU and CSU and fans of the road team generally are shut out of attending. It's also nice to take a weekend away and see every game in a neutral site location and obviously that's not possible in the Big South format.

Thanks for the correction on the non-D1 RPI status. That had slipped my mind.

Big South sucks as a conference. There is no way I would want to move to that conference from the ASun. From what I understand Kennesaw had the opportunity to move to either Big South or ASun out of DII and it was a pretty easy choice for us to move to the ASun.

I don't know of any reason why a KSU fan would want to join the Big South.

Campbell fans, on the other hand..... Well, just look at a map.

The Big South and A-Sun are pretty much on par----but the Big South has better premier programs at the top. No one in the A-Sun in basketball can match or even come close to Winthrop's success and no one can rival Coastal in baseball. That gives the Big South the edge but otherwise they are very similar.
