Conley Gets 5 Year $45M Extension
Per ESPN. He has looked much improved this season, maybe premature though. Hope it pays off.

I'm almost ready to say I was totally wrong about him. I hope he keeps using his quickness the way he should have been his whole career.

After a few less than par seasons, this offer should have waited until the end of the year!!!! He looks good so far this year......BUT it has only been 3 games.

I think we should have held out on making the offer until the very last day. Make him continue to earn the contract.

RE: Conley Gets 5 Year $45M Extension
National media tools, and of course their fanboys, are already ripping the Grizzlies to shreds. Big time overreaction to me. So it's cool for other teams to give backup point guards $6-7mil per but not okay for the Grizzlies to give a starting guard 1 million more? Thabeet at $5mil/year is MUCH worse than Conley at $8mil/year so if you want to ***** about the Grizzlies, atleast do it for the right reasons. If Conley keeps playing like he has the 2nd half of last season and especially the first 3 games of this season, $8mil/year will be a bargain. Luxury tax is around $70mil. Grizz can still comfortably extend Gasol and Z-bo if they choose to. Don't see what the big deal is. 1 thing people seem to forget is that our owner is a billionaire, one of the richest owners in professional sports, and even if he had to cross the luxury tax threshold to keep a playoff team together I think he would. He's done it before.

RE: Conley Gets 5 Year $45M Extension
I was just browsing through some Conley comments on Twitter and was very surprised to see most people actually use their heads before they posted. Refreshing. I won't hold my breathe it will stay like that though. Late night news so when all the Chad Ford/Bill Simmons jock sniffers wake up to go to school in the morning, I'm sure the currently loud minority will turn into the majority.

I think it's a good move. Honestly I don't see him getting worse. He works hard and has a good head on his shoulders. Even if he went to the bench I think it would be money well spent. Good job grizzlies. Like someone said they need to sign Marc and it will be more than eight a year

RE: Conley Gets 5 Year $45M Extension
I don't have too big of a problem with this. As Jenkz explained, $8mil is really not too much to have tied to your starting point guard. I want to like Conley so much, as I think he is working hard and is a genuinely good person, teammate, and player. Hopefully, he can continue to build on the second half of last season and the first few games of this season.
The main problem that I see with this is that it will probably hinder the signing of either Marc, Z-Bo, or Mayo. Marc needs to be our #1 priority now. I am okay with losing the other two, if necessary.
I'm still dumbfounded by our stupidity with Thabeet, though.

Thabeets may be worse but I expected it. The Grizzlies would have said they made a mistake drafting Thabeet 2nd if they didn't do it.
If we lose Gasol, Zbo or Mayo over this it's a HUGE mistake.

Where does this leave us with Mayo? Will we be able to sign him as well?

RE: Conley Gets 5 Year $45M Extension
I can't blame these guys for thinking this is stupid. In a way, it is. What other teams will pay him that much? Why do it 3 pretty good games in when he's been terrible for 3 seasons? No reason not to wait until deadline, or even do like you did with Rudy and wait until the end of the season.
Here's my only problem besides the above: How are we going to pay him and Rudy so much money (+ Thabeet's 5 million next season), and still have enough money to afford Zach, Marc, OJ, etc.?
Is he trying to max the luxury tax portion as well?

I didn't think I could be more pissed than the night we drafted Thabeet. Well that changed this morning when I saw the paper.

RE: Conley Gets 5 Year $45M Extension
Extending all 3 would almost certainly take us into the luxury tax. If the team made the playoffs this year, theres a possibility Heisley might be willing to do that. Otherwise, unless Z-Bo willingly takes a big paycut, he's gonna be the odd man out IMO. But that was gonna happen regardless of whether Conley got his deal or not.
Sometimes you have to make sacrifices. Being in a small market makes it hard to go over the luxury tax on a regular basis but if your team is on the verge of a playoff run, that's a sacrifice you have to make.
2010 Western Conference playoff teams:
Los Angeles - was over the tax
Dallas - was over the tax
Phoenix - was over the tax
Denver - was over the tax
Utah - was over the tax
Portland - was over the tax (right at line)
San Antonio - was over the tax (right at line, under this year but will be over again next)
OKC - The ONLY team that made the playoffs in the Western Conference that was under the luxury tax. Their players (mainly because of Durant) made the jump 1 year early. Same boat as we are though. The whole team is due up for extensions the next 2 seasons.

well he was a better pick than Oden?
but seriously, its great to let the players know you're behind them as an organization....but why are we picking up all these options before the year even really gets goin? especially Thabeet. If the Griz pick up the 4th year option they're blowin 6 mil more on the guy

RE: Conley Gets 5 Year $45M Extension
the Grizz are ging to have to choose between Zach and Gasol and I am not sure about Mayo.
Mayo is a big name but he is not a great player --he is not a great shooter and not a great scorer --and not a great defender --I would trade him to a team that valued him more and get a shooter back.. especially if it somehow meant that I could keep Gasol and Zbo.
