Any B12 schools being looked at and how about Boston College coming home?

Memphis football is "awful" right now, but there is nothing which cannot (or will not) be fixed. Besides, 5 bowls in the last 7 1/2 years is better than many schools can say. Memphis academics are no worse than the other state school candidates. Facilities are better than you think (light years ahead of Villanova, at least) and are being steadily improved in accordance with Tranghese's recommendations. Memphis brings a top 50 TV market which it delivers, the tradition-rich Liberty Bowl, strong corporate support for the Big East network, nationally-recognized rivalries with Louisville and Cincinatti, is a logical extension of the Big East footprint and a great basketball program. Big East officials would be foolish overlook all that UofM offers.

The Big East is not going to wait. Memphis has had time to improve just as TCU, Utah, BYU, Boise and has done little to nothing. If other candidates are right now ahead of Memphis then the ship may have already sailed for your school.

I think it's going to be REALLY hard to go up to 20. Remember all of the Big Ten expansion news stories that talked about how expanding to 16 schools was almost a certainty (and I had some very knowledgeable people tell me that directly, too). When push came to shove, though, the conference presidents showed that they are very conservative by nature and they chose to add the bare minimum that will maximize revenues instead of the "world domination" schemes that bloggers (like myself) love to write about. Note that the NY Post article stated that the non-football members don't want to expand the overall league past 16, so jumping up to 20 is unrealistic. We may see 18 (TCU plus one other football school if Villanova doesn't rise), but even that can't necessarily be counted on if the non-football members are as dug in on capping the league at 16 as they seem to be. There's going to be a lot of give and take here if there's any movement at all.

How many Big East schools are at that level right now, Buck? And they have all the advantages of BCS inclusion.

Some major action is imminent. The BE football schools are in a critical point for their future right now and have to make some change sooner rather than later or their future is in jeopardy.

No one outside the doors of those meetings knows much more than any random poster on these message boards.....but despite the fact that the NY Post (!?) is the source making this report, it looks as if things may truly be heating up.....will be interesting to see how things shake out....

I agree, at this point the only thing factual is a meeting is being held in Philly tomorrow....."most likely" that its about expansion, but details are all speculative coming from the NY Post.

Not to be disrespectful, Gray, but every BE school is far and away a better fb school than Memphis. Its not Memphis' right of passage to be invited to the BE. There are several BE programs that have performed at the level that BYU, UTAH, and TCU are performing at. Memphis never has.

That about sums up my opinion. I honestly stopped caring whether we move or not...we will or we won't, and I'll just sit back and watch.

The one point I would add to buckaineer's statement, is that Memphis is a much smaller market than Houston and some of the others mentioned...but we actually deliver the market unlike some of the other candidates.

I keep thinking back to what the associate commish said paraphrased "the conference will be doing something no other conference has done"....not sure if thats getting to 20, splitting the conference but still running both, or something miniscual to us in reality....It does appear we will have some since of direction by the end of the year or after bowl season.

From what little I know about Houston, this looks like the best hope for long term stability. The only negative would be if the Longhorn Conference imploded the next day and we could have had Kansas, KSU, Missouri and ISU instead. And even then, that may not be better in the long run.

If the Texas Ten/Longhorn Conference/Big 12/Big XII-2 imploded the day after it would mean the dawn of the superconference and it would be time for a split and time to add those 4 schools probably as the Big 16. I think a conference with
Big 16 East - UConn, Syracuse, Rutgers, Temple, Pitt, WVU, USF, UCF
Big 16 West - UL, Cincy, Mizzou, Iowa State, Kansas, K-State, TCU, Houston
would be a very, very good one.

Spot on brista21! I agree 100%.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is probably true. But we would still have invited at least three programs into the mix that may not have been there otherwise. Not sure if that help or hurts us really. But it definitely makes it more complicated and interesting.

I agree and a split at this juncture is much more plausible than in previous times due to the old guard almost all being gone. Plus there's the added benefit that both sides have full-enough rosters of schools to continue successfully. In the end it comes down to the Catholic schools wanting to keep the Big East intact more than they feel the league is already way too big. If they decide staying together is more valuable we'll expand and if they really dig in today then we could see a split announced at last.

FWIW as I said previously, Lenn Robbins is very good and very knowledgable. Unlike much of the Post their sports staff really does a great job and doesn't just sensationalize like the rest of the staff does.

The BE wants two things:
1.A larger tv market(more tv revenue) ie Phil,Dallas/FtWorth,Orlando,Houston
2.At least one more league game(less scheduling difficulty and no big payoffs to weak OOC schools)
Yes, the objectives are about money.

RE: Big East looks to expand
I think the Big East Football schools should just take a "you need us more than we need you" attitude with the BBall schools.

Pick up TCU (9), UCF (10), Houston (11), and ECU (12). Those are 4 well respected football programs that won't "water-down" the Big East. You get your foot into Texas, and you become as big as the ACC in Florida (FSU and Miami do NOT have the fan support they had 10 years ago).

If the 8 BBall schools want to form some sort of "Super-Conference" with the 12 that's great, but if not, so be it.

Pitt lost by 3 AT Utah with a new QB. We don't know how schools would do this season against Boise, TCU, etc. but it would be a safe bet all would do better, much better than Memphis. Besides, the BE has had schools perform better over the years than those programs and BE schools are BE schools. Memphis is not.

Best all around candidates would be TCU, Memphis, ECU, and UCF in my opinion.

From being in a conference with Houston for a long time I think you would be disapointed in their addition. They really don't deliver that market and fan support is not close to other candidates.

ECU is going to have some serious questions to answer about conference affiliation if C-USA gets even weaker from a BE raid. As it is it is a horrible fit for us, and if multiple C-USA teams were gone I don't know if it would be worth it to remain there. I don't exactly know what the answer would be in the short term though. Maybe indy until the eventual move of a bunch of 1AA's up.

West Virginia AD, Oliver Luck is very familiar with Houston from his days running the Houston Dynamo and the Houston Sports Authority. His opinion will outweigh yours, TigerPete.

RE: Big East looks to expand
I think if your gonna get up to 20 teams or maybe 20+ teams, you need to call it out what it is and that's really two conferences. Thus, it brings into play the funnel concept which allows the old school big east school's to keep an eastern identity by separating the leagues on geography but gives the football school's 12 teams. You got a nice base of:

big east: prov, st j , shall, nova, gtown, uconn, cuse, rut, pitt, wvu,

big central: Dep, mar, ND, cincy, lville, memphis, ECU, UCF, USF, TCU

you could switch some teams around and/or add smu + houston to get to 14 football but no more than 12 in each league...also like adding umass and st louisU
