"The next guy"
I just watched this interview and it kind of bugged me how Coach English used the term "The next guy":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x23sfqbdLQ

I'm not quite sure. If coach ends up getting the program in the right direction, I would love to have him stay. However from this video, it just seems like there is a vibe he wouldn't stay if he were to be offered a coaching job at a higher ranked school. What do you guys think about this? Am I reading to far into this interview?

RE: "The next guy"
If he got a job offer right now it would be an assistant coach. He would have to show alot more than he's shown so far at EMU to get an offer as head coach at the Div I level.

And while I hope for a few more wins this season in MAC games, I'm not sure that we'll have a great recruiting class either JUCO or high school
based on early indications and compared with other MAC programs. [/align]

Why?

He had a pretty good class this year - a bunch of redshirting frosh OL, Scott, Mitchell, Benz, a good punter, a couple good JUCO DLs, and probably a few more redshirts on defense.

Add Marrow and Pollard to this or next year's class.

English and crew are actually doing okay. 03-idea

Some academic issues kept this year's class from being very good. K. Thomas' brother, the JUCO WR Reynolds (?) from CA, maybe LaVon McCoy, etc.

Steve -

I know we are both very passionate about EMU and are on the same in wanting success, but that may be the funniest statement I have seen in a long time. 03-lmfao

RE: "The next guy"
English's two classes have ranked last in the MAC. His recruiting has a long way to go to make EMU a MAC competitive team. Let's look at Kurt A. and his recruiting reputation. I"m sure Kurt is a good recruiter but how good of a recruiter do you have to be to get a player that no other Div I school offers? Take for example Hansen the offensive lineman from NE his only other offer was a walk on at NE. Gee do I take a full ride at EMU or pay my own way at NE?

Steve, go back and long at every player you thought was going to be an impact player in your own posts and count how many are still on the roster at EMU.

Some other posters and I have said when you see players choose EMU over other MAC schools then you can say the program has arrived.

'79 are you still reading 8 - 10 month old press clips, Scout.com, Rivals.com, etc.???

All of the kids who signed with EMU and have shown up have either played or redshirted. They have been seen by us on Saturdays or by others in practices.

Hansen will be a player at EMU. Don't know if he'll develop into another T.J. but he'll be a player. Best of the redshirt OLs.

I believe it has been posted here that Pollard is doing very well in practice.

That is two of our 'hidden gems' getting ready for next season.

Steve, was last year's team 0-12 and is this year's team is 1-6. I don't need press clippings to know good recruiting equals good results on the field and in the win column. I haven't seen a winning season yet despite many of English recruits getting starting opportunities last year and this.

You've hyped almost every player English has recruited including guys who didn't even make the opening day roster and guys who can't even beat out former walk ons for starting positions. Here's an example from the first recruiting class:

http://www.ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=376332

And least we forget, Pollard and Hansen haven't even been on the field yet at EMU and here you are once again touting them. At least I agree with you that Pollard has a good recruiting rep but then again so did Payne and Moffett.

And yes Steve I've to been to some EMU games in person. Yes some of the recruits made some good plays but not enough of them to win the games.

Other MAC teams recruit too and we're still playing catch up in my opinion.

Maybe he means when he is fired?

Seriously, we all know this is a bus stop job. Stay for a bit and then leave. It is not nor will it ever be,a job filled by a coach for 20 years.

English should not even worry about that stuff now. 1-18 is pathetic.

Two points:

1). Me and everyone else is guilty of reading press clippings, scout.com, rivals.com, etc. for players NO one has seen and trying to predict who will be a player and who will not. On Aug 9. 2009 who have seen those JUCOs? They weren't around for spring ball. They weren't redshirts. Etc. Etc.

2). The salient point about Pollard, Hansen, and (lesser degree) Benz is that folks HAVE seen them play. Folks who say Hansen and Pollard can play are not reading one year old press clips. Hansen and Pollard have been ON THE FIELD, but not on Saturdays. Folks in IL have seen Benz play and reported good things. The same folks were luke warm to Moffett. (Edgytim.com to be exact).

RE: "The next guy"
Steve, how many EMU football practices have you been to personally?
I venture to say the same amount as I have: zero-very little.
So I would guess you are getting your information on practice performances second hand. My evaluation is what I see in game results.

Lets see I"ve seen you mention Benz as the next LeFevour but apparently he can't get past Gillette. McCoy-you commented that English would control his weight, Axon was the next great EMU running back (it would be nice if English would recruit some) and Thomas sad to say many us EMU fans ignored his history of injuries at Louisville which it looks like are being repeated here.

I'm tired of hearing the hype so me the results of English's great recruiting on the field where it counts.

I agree to a point emu79, the success of recruiting is measured in on field performance. But it's not a reliable measure of English's recruiting until his recruits are upperclassmen.

Mike Krzyzewski might be the best recruiter in college basketball, but his Duke teams didn't make the NCAA tournament until his first recruits were seniors.

I think a lot of the over-hype for some of these players comes as a result of lack of coverage for EMU. As fans we are left to fill in the blanks with our own imaginations.

Right now our lack of success under English can be attributed to a variety of factors, but Genyk's last recruiting classes and English Freshmen and Sophomores are what we are seeing right now.

A reasonable expectation based on the results of the first year of the Ron English regime would be to have 2-3 wins this year, 3-4 wins next year and 4-5 wins in 2012. The 2013 team should be competing for a Bowl Game and MAC title. 04-cheers
