Screw this FCS crud!
but we have more road games than home games scheduled, we have to even that out at some point

i understand the logic with getting these 1 and done FCS games for scheduling purposes (if we got no choice, then we got no choice)
but i don't understand what i've read above about some coaches (presumably not ours!) demanding 1 FCS cupcake per season on the schedule pursuant to their contract!

I totally understand it. Especially at the BCS level, schools are very demanding of their coaches and quick to get rid of them if they are not winning. Playing 1 FCS every year adds to their win total probably 80-95% of the time, and could be the difference between getting in a bowl game or not. That all could add up to a little more job security in a profession that has very little job security.

I understand the FCS games but have to say I like the New Hampshire game much more than Coastal Carolina. New Hampshire is a playoff team year in and year out and its the very first game of the year.

I don't mind the Bill Snyder/Kansas St model of rebuilding a program when a program has never once been to a bowl game and has 60 years of losing.
But i don't think fans like it, especially not at high profile programs. Toledo is the class of the MAC and we don't need this BS.
Kansas St was a no win job and that was only way to rebuild.
We need to fill the schedule. I get it. So balance it out and then do 1 for 1's with other non bCS.

If Stanford can play Sacramento State and Iowa play Eastern Illinois and Boston College play Weber State... we can play Coastal Carolina.

I like us playing them. If the majority of all other 1A teams, including a lot of the top 25, play 1AA teams, why shouldn't we? It SHOULD be an easy win/tune-up.

We have at least a couple FCS games per year by virtue of the fact we play in the MAC.

I give up.
I'm in the distinct minority here among people who think we don't play enough "tune ups".
No big deal.

Take that 2012 schedule, add a team like La Tech or S. AL and we could go undefeated and not even sniff the top 25.

If we never had 2 for 1 or 1 and done then there would have been no: Penn St, Pitt, Minn, Kansas, Mich, Purdue, etc. So occasionally you need to balance the schedule with a FCS game at home. As long as our schedule is not full of them then its ok. I like some of the 1 for 1 that MOB has scheduled but not all series can be 1 for 1 and so you get a FCS here and there. By far we have the best OOC schedule in the MAC and a few FCS games over the next few years is going to be ok.

I'm in your corner on this, Owen. We've got the most enviable schedule in the MAC. Ask any of the other 12 teams if they'd rather host the likes of Coastal Carolina / New Hampshire or Miami, FL / Arizona on a somewhat regular basis and there would be know debate.
Also, there's no guaranteed win in college football, regardless of the level of competition a team schedules. There's nothing to be gained by beating Coastal Carolina. Lose, however, and it can ruin a season.

Going undefeated in 2012, means winning on the road at Arizona and Wyoming in back to back weeks. Thats not too shabby, I think someone would notice. Plus we don't know who the other OOC home game is going to be against in 2012.

for a team that hasnt sniffed bowl eligibility in 5 years, there is plenty to be gained with a an easy(yes easy, its not new hampshire or villanova) win

I KNOW i can't be alone with this statement. I think I can say with complete confidence, if OPELT could have put together an injury free senior season we not only sniff a bowl but are in a bowl.
Of course, Aaron Opelt proved he couldn't make it without suffering an injury in any season...but I'm just saying...
And we would of done it without playing a single weber st.

The reason being is that most people view the MAC schedule as an easy slate, not BCS material. If you want to reinforce that image play FCS cupcakes. Rockets need to get to the place where they are dominant in the MAC and with some solid BCS wins if you want to improve the national image of the program. If you are afraid to play the big boys you are admitting that the program sucks. I personally would not like to see UT get into Bowls because of a padded schedule and get their clocks cleaned. For the type of money HC's get these days they shouldn't be getting those FCS games in their contracts and make their win records better than they should be.
