RE: A New View of Close by Austin Dantin
Dantin's whole comment was that Toledo beat the defending MAC East Champs even though "we are not even close to what we are capable of doing." To me, that's the entire team.....mainly offense, but entire team he is talking about. It's quite obvious that the offense didn't play well again, and it sounds to me like he admitted that and believes we can be much better.
Given that, I don't understand the comment that Dantin was not watching the same game???
This offense has always been about getting the ball into the playmakers hands. Dantin completed something like 75% of his passes, so he's getting it to them.....they just are not making the plays. Some of it is playcalling. Some of it is Page being covered so tightly and others not stepping up. Some of it is the run game not producing enough. And twice it was a mistake by a young QB that is still learning and threw INT's to a team that had one of the better defenses in the MAC last year.
I agree this offense can be much better than it has shown in the first two weeks. I see nothing wrong with his comments. And if he wasn't confident in the offense's abilities to be much better, that's when we have a big problem at QB. But that's not the case.

He has to stop talking about how good we are or can be and start showing it on game day. Let you play do the talkng.

Agree. Sounds like he's trying to stay positive but I'd like to hear "We have a long way to go and there are some obvious corrections that need to be made. Those start with me because I'm the guy taking the snaps so I'm committing to improve my performance. thank you."

These recent comments keep making me question certain things:
1.) Is he saying this because he's used to seeing what the #1 O can do against the #2 D in practice
2.) Are the coaches continuing to play tight with the playbook until Dantin gets more game experience and is more comfortable, so Dantin knows what's truly in the arsenal that we haven't seen yet?
3.) Do we have a coaching problem where none of the players are playing even close to their full potential (good coaches get the athletes to play above their level, poor coaches get them to play below their level)
4.) Is it none of these and something I'm missing or stupid mistakes holding us back on every drive?

I am totally geeked to see Toledo FINALLY have a defense. How many years have we been absent on the defensive side of the ball. I have heard several people point out that, despite the lopsided score against Arizona, there were some good signs on the defensive side for the Rockets. They really showed up against Ohio. Defense deserves the credit for the win. Offense has issues. When the offense gets on track, UT has potential to do very well in the MAC this year. Queue the fight song!

Keep in mind that this a very young defence, only 2 or 3 senior starters. Expect some spoaratic play this year but , the future is definately bright!

I am soooo pleased to see progress on the defensive side of the ball. We can make improvements no doubt, but seem to be on the right track. You have to have good D to have any success in this conference. Without a decent D, even the lesser MAC teams and FCS schools will give you a run for your money on any given night. We have witnessed this quite a bit over the past couple years.
My 2nd favorite team is the Bucks (let the flames begin! :bustacap:). When I came to UT for school in '88, UT took over as my favorite team . Talking tOSU for a minute...they won a national championship in 02/03 by winning ugly with defense. The O was just good enough and had flashes of brilliance when it had to, but it was the D that won most of the games. Most of the games were like a heart attack, but they won every single one:
9-21-02 at Cincinnati WON 23-19
10-5-02 at Northwestern WON 27-16
10-19-02 at Wisconsin WON 19-14
10-26-02 PENN STATE WON 13-7
11-9-02 at Purdue WON 10-6
11-16-02 at Illinois WON 23-16 (OT)
11-23-02 MICHIGAN WON 14-9
1-3-03 Miami FL WON 31-24 (2OT)
The moral of the story is...give Beckman and his coaches a chance. We are starting out a bit conservative on offense, but will step things up as the year goes on when the personnel shows they can do more without making critical mistakes. If our D can keep us in the MAC games, our offense will eventually come around soon enough. We have the weapons, we just need the poise and the confidence. If we start clicking on both sides of the ball, we can be a dangerous team. We were in that AZ game until the mistakes started coming against a good team near the end of the first half. It could have easily been a more respectable outcome. I'll take a crushing D and an offense that does just enough to win over what we have had the last couple years.

Why would anyone flame over this? I'm a big fan of Andrew Bogut and I think they'll be a playoff threat this year if Redd can regain his outside touch. Milwaukee's a nice town.

LOL H2Oville...Fear the Deer baby! BTW, I wonder how Andrew Bogut is doing after that nasty fall? I was watching that game when it happened (I am a Suns fan). Felt bad for the guy to go down hard like that. Those Bucks still beat my Suns too, they really stunk it up that night.

I'm a Celts guy since I was about six and anyone who takes Jordan over Russel as all-time best earns my scorn! Don't REALLY follow the Bucks but that one was hard to pass up.
Bogut is expected to miss the early part of the season although he's practicing.
