Told you Kobe wouldn't let the Lakers let Derek go
Quote from Fish-
"Kobe Bryant asked me to stay but supported whatever decision I made. He and I have played together for 11 seasons, came into the league together as kids, and has been loyal to me even when others had doubts. We have won five championships together."

Now all the Lakers have to do is step up to the plate and do right by Fish. I am certain that he doesn't want to leave, but if the Lakers want to try to treat him on the cheap, he might.

They have announced a 3 year deal with Derek. The salary details have not been announced. Derek basically acknowledged he could have made more money somewhere else, but wanted to stay in LA to go for a 3 peat. I'm sure they raised the initial 2.5 million offer, but don't know if they got to the 5 million Derek made last year. I have to imagine they will give him, at least, a tad more than new point guard signee Steve Blake who signed for 4 million a year. Derek is loved in LA and can probably make up the salary difference he may have got somewhere else doing commercials, etc. in Hollywood.

Since Derek is a couple of weeks from turning 36, I have a feeling the 3rd year of the contract included an option to work on the coaching staff or in the front office. While the Bulls and Heat likely would have paid Derek more for 2 years, I doubt they were ready to do a 3 year deal with a 36 year old player. Adding that year probably clinched it for the Lakers.

That sounds very logical and typical for Derek's smart and clear thinking.

I can see Derek either in the front office or as a coach in the NBA in the future. Young men don't come along very often in the world of pro sports like Fish. A tribute to his upbringing. The apple doesn't normally fall far from the tree. And we know what a jewel his mother is.

I'd rather see him as a college coach, preferably of the UALR Trojans someday soon.
