I think 10 is the number as well.
I like 10 as well. It allows for round robin basketball and football. the downfall would be if you chose nine conference games, you have the situation the BE has now of uneven amounts of home/away games in conference. However, the optimal number for scheduling and revenue are two different things. 12 is probably the optimal set up for revenue maximization, as it allows for more games in a TV inventory, a rotation of teams on the schedule, and a championship game for those who can sell it, without having so many teams you go years without playing each other.
Strangely enough, I know many would disagree, but I think the Big East has a near optimal set up as far a football and nonfootball teams coexisting. If you had 10 or 12 football teams, but 16 total teams, which gives you 16 basketball teams, and roughly ten to twelve in each non-revenue sport (since not all schools sponsor all other sports), you have a perfect football set up, but more teams for other sports and allowing for the ability to make more money for basketball (see BE bb TV contract).
Without naming teams to add or subtract, the hybrid set up (just the set up, not the make up) that the Big East has actually allows your conference with access to more markets without havinmg to divide the pie as much. Especially if you have a conference network to maximize revenue. And a tough down the line conference is the best way to maximize basketball regular season revenue, as the intra conference competition can outway the negatives the NCAA tournament has on the regular season, by making the conference championship a draw in itself.
The problem for our conference is the lack of marquee teams, and thus the ultimate makeup of the conference. however, the set up, at least in theory, could be a perfect.
