Make the new guys "earn" their share, so to speak...meanwhile the two are at least gathering exposure and increasing ticket sales, etc. in a BCS conference.

How about this for a fair deal? During the first 5 years of membership, UCF and Memphis forfeit conference TV shares each year they finish below .500?

Can I ask why Memphis would want to get out of Conference USA? They kind of have a good thing going from a basketball perspective (being able to blow through that league and get a good seed each year). They don't seem to be very good program in football.

Well, the first thing are the initials "BCS". Second, $$$$. Third, not having to hear about local players choosing schools just because the other school was in a BCS conference...I guess that's related to my first point. Finally, Memphis fans are tired of an entire slate of conference basketball games they don't care about without any traditional rivals.

I think that covers most of it.

Fair enough. I did not mean any offense, I just know that Memphis is a dynamic basketball program and usually blows through CUSA. From an outsider's perspective, I didn't even realize they put much emphasis on football.

None taken. There's certainly more emphasis on basketball...and fans/boosters would love football to increase in capabilities, but we're trying to recruit football players as a CUSA school with 9 of 12 SEC schools within a 5-6 hour radius. It's frustrating to see so much homegrown talent leave here because of three little initials.

Notre Dame?? Hold the presses...the "Notre Dame should stay independent" comment by Lou Holtz was just retracted, today.

HOLTZ says ND should go to Big 10

Interesting that Lou Holtz would say that ... 03-idea. George Lapides had several guests on his Sports 56 Radio Show today. One of them was Dave Pingalore (Tampa/Orlando area) and the other was the writer for Orangeblood.com who broke the story that UT-Austin was staying put in the Big XII.

He had some interesting things to say about the state of the Big XII and Notre Dame. Getting straight to the point, "Notre Dame could have it's TV Contract (like Texas) and banquet from the same Conference TV Contract table as the rest of the boys."

If that's case, BE might as well offer ND the Texas package and they can just add football to the BE and they won't even have to move their other sports. They also don't have to deal with Texas and OU in the BE.

Hey ... Just sharing my two cents worth (LOL). I guess if the New Big East TV Contract is as big as the Big XII's per team, then it may be a no issue.

On the other hand, if Notre Dame is the only reason the Big X is contemplating expansion, if may just bring that threat to a Holt ... 03-wink.

That popular opinion is somewhat exaggerated, as anyone who saw the game between UCF and Memphis last Fall should know.

Holtz is such an idiot, and as usual, he is a day late and a dollar short with this statement. Texas killed the "super conference" crap by staying in the Big 12-2. Yet here is Holtz talking the super conference crap still.

At this stage of the game, the Big Ten will not expand without ND. ND knows the financial numbers and can see that a Big Ten expansion won't make sense unless the Irish are part of it. So ND is calling the Big Ten bluff.

In my opinion, expansion is over for at least five years unless Jerry Jones can bribe Arkansas to leave the SEC for the Longhorn Conference.

I'll go even further. I think the Big East will expand before the Big Ten.

Expansion could be done for awhile. Yet, i could see the big east make a move at the very least add one football team but the memphis + st louis combo is good. Or the big 12 could jump back to 12 at any time even though they say something else at the moment but neither of those moves effect other bcs league since they are picking off non bcs teams. As for the big 10, they really don't have any leverage to get ND into the league as team 13-14 + they might still be sticking with the dream of getting texas into the league. The problem with getting texas in the big 10 is for that to happen, texas tech, texas A&M, OU, and OSU would all need to find homes in either the pac 10 or sec + texas doesn't want to split with OU or texas tech, so hard to package the moves. The most likley scenario is texas A&m, texas tech, OU, and OSU to the sec, which would send texas to the big 10 but the odds probably favor texas tech, texas, ou, and osu to the pac 16 if the big 12 didn't last with texas A&m to the sec. I do wonder what would happen if the big 10 offered missouri and say rutgers to jump to 14 sometime this summer. Would the big 12 be able to take that hit? or would everybody scatter? The big 10 might not want to touch missouri since it probably won't be able to land the texas school's and it doesn't do them good to send them to the sec or pac 10. The only option the big 10 has really is syracuse and rutgers to jump to 14 which could pressure ND to finally move to the big 10 and be paired with pitt, uconn or make a run at maryland + long shot school's of bc or miami. Since cuse and rutgers aren't going anywhere, unless the acc jumps in, the big 10 might be content for awhile at 12 and see how that play's out before moving to 14. Than again, just as the pac 10 pulled the huge surprise and screwed up the big 10's gameplan, if the acc came up with a 16 team super conference model of offering 4 from wvu, pitt, uconn, cuse, and rutgers or even 2 out of that pool, would that action force to the big 10 to make a move?

RE: Recap: Memphis radio interview w/ WKNG Orlando reporter who says UCF & UM to BE
Regarding Holtz.

1. He was run off at Notre Dame.
2. He is employed by a company that stands to gain greatly if Notre Dame joins any conference other than the Mountain West.

The defusing of the realignment bomb at this point may not be a win for most schools.

Remember the old saying, "Generals always try to fight the last war." They focus on equipment and strategy that were vital in the last conflict and tend to be unprepared when something new comes along.

World War I was a static front war of attrition and today we see tanks and planes as they key to ending it when really Germany was running out of fighting capacity at the same point Allied capacity to fight was increasing because the US had entered on their side. The visionary saw that tanks and planes could prevent getting into a static war of attrition even though their impact on the actual battlefield had been limitied.

WWII was a different war that not everyone was ready for. Not France with their defensive line, and not the US caught off-guard by the idea of a critical naval battle not involving ships within gun range (Pearl Harbor).

The Texas decision to stay with the Big XII is likely that turning point. If they launch LSN and it is a hit and at the same time alternate delivery methods are becoming more robust the need for the conference tv package for the elite schools becomes less relevant and future alignment becomes more about going "old school", that is the league exists to provide a stable schedule, to crown a winner, promote all-conference teams, and assign officials and is not so much of an economic engine in football.
