Shulman building a team around jucos & transfers at UTC
Desperation or savy recruiting?

Next season, Shulman at UTC will have 6 jucos/transfers on his team:
Keegan Bell (jr.)-Vanderbilt
Omar Wattad (jr.)-Georgetown
Drazen Slovaric-Geogria (elgible in 2011-2012)
Philip Jurick-UT, (jr.) Chattanooga State C.C.
B.J. Frazier-WKU, (jr.)-Cattanooga State. C.C.
DeAntre Jefferson (sr.)-Vincennes C.C.
Troy Cage (sr.)- Kilgore C.C.

What does everything think of this recruiting strategy? These are all talented players, but can you build a championship squad with an influx of transfers?

It could be what you do when you are feeling the heat and need to win immediately.

RE: Shulman building a team around jucos & transfers at UTC
This has been the UTC way for a long time.. it's like high school recruits.. in that sometimes the combinations work and sometimes they don't..
With high school kids you have more time to work with them to mold a TEAM.. but sometimes if the juco guys blend..it happens faster..
Lots of schools have transfers and jucos.. just seems like UTC always has more of them.. and some years it has worked well for them..

Bob Huggins routinely built his teams with JUCOs

Drazen Zlovaric .. transfer from Ga.. is an example of a very highly recruited high schooler who is a flop as a college player.. he was a top 40 ranked player coming out of high school ..I think near Chattanooga..
He chose Georgia over Texas.. He played very little in two years at Ga.. I believe the best game of his college career was 6 points against UNC Asheville.. I have some friends who are big DAWG fans and they are happy to see him go..He was asked to leave.. My friends said he might do better in the SoCon, but he played against Wofford last year and did not score...maybe sitting out next year will help him..

I watched Drazen play in high school quite a bit as he was in my district. He was WAAYYY out of his league in the SEC. He played for Cleveland High School which is about 25mins from Chatt. At one time that district was ridiculously tough (JuJuan Smith's team didnt win a game) but it was a creampuff the year he played there. He played against poor competition in high school which greatly inflated his numbers. In high school he was often guarded by kids that would not make a division one team even as a walkon. He has good athleticism but is short on skill in my opinion. He picked up a lot of trash points and just outsized a lot of people. Now that everybody else is as athletic and tall as he is he appears to be SOL.

You would think that recruiters at schools like Texas and Georgia would have seen that???? I don't remember ETSU recruiting him.. but we were the only D1 school that offered JuJuan.. Again, I think it shows our coaches can spot talent. and bring in some guys that others overlook..
and,it's a good example of the rating services not always being right!!!

Kyle Groothius of UNF played in that district too and he often played at the same level as Drazen. But Groothius had more overall team talent and with terrance oglesby on the team, he was a secondary scorer on his team. Drazen was all that Cleveland had so the offense ran through him and his numbers were better. I was shoked when I heard he signed with GA.

I dont know what they were looking at either. He was far from a dominant player IMHO. JuJuan Smith on the other hand was dynamite. He dominated a league with players such as justin hare, kellen pickle, charles little, and a bunch of other low d-1/naia kids. I have faith that his staff can spot talent with the best of them, especially guards. Look at Sheldon. He wasnt rated that high but performed pretty well for a freshman pg. CP was on a LLOOOAAADDEEEDDD team in high school was probably the third or fourth best player on his team for most of his career but our staff saw his upside and his ability to play.

Others saw CP's ability to play as well but backed off when he didn't qualify academically. ETSU was willing to wait and see if he could make the grades.

JuCo's and transfers? He better make sure somebody there gets them a degree or they get to play somewhere, all of them. UT-C football took an APR hit from stuff that took place around the time we took them to spankytown in 03, so don't be suprised if the NCAA isn't keeping a more watchful eye on UT-C athletics.
