Saw Gus Leeper today
I attended Coach Shield’s basketball camp this morning. Coach Shields had 102 campers when I was there. The camp was worked by Coach Shields, Coach Kleine, Coach Golding, Coach Terry and Coach Lowery. Also working the camp were Too Tall Eason and a few others I could not place.

While watching the camp Gus Leeper came in and we set together for about an hour and talked about UALR and Gus. Gus was a nice young man and pleasant to speak with.

He says he is working out in the weight room four days a week in the early morning and works on his shooting in the evenings. He has put on four pounds since he has been here. He speaks highly of our trainer Coach Switlik. Gus is not taking any courses the first summer session but will be taking courses starting in July. His major will be construction engineering. He is the only new team member on campus this month. He has an apartment about a mile off campus. Gus has been trying to get familiar with the area. He went to Hot Springs last week end.

He asked who our biggest rival was and I advised ASU. He really liked the Stephens Center and asked if it was ever full. I advised against ASU but a normal crowd would be around 3000 (reported). He asked how many tickets the players get and asked where they sit. I pointed out to him where Matt Mouzy's parents sit but advised I did not know if everyone sit there.

While watching Coach Kleine give free throw instruction to the campers I ask Gus what his free throw shooting percentage was last year. He said about 75% but he didn’t really shoot that many free throws last year. He said he was usually doubled or triple teamed last year and when the ball came in he frequently would pitch back out to one of their three point shooters outside. I ask him if he had a good midrange shot or did he work mostly underneath. He said he could shoot the three.

We talked about last years disappointing season and he pointed out we lost a lot of close games. I did not get the impression that he was too concerned with last years results and was looking toward the future.

His dad is a lawyer in Texas. Dad is about one inch taller but has a bigger frame. Gus is working on his. He will be 19 years old next month.

RBL - you're hired as our new SID. There's more information in your post than what comes out of the AD's office over an entire season. Keep up the good work.

No, really. We will not hear that much info come out of the AD's office in a decade, and I'm being serious. You're hired!

And all these years I thought SID stood for "Secret Information Department".01-lauramac2

Today was my 66th birthday. Having an hour with Gus was a nice present.

Question for RBL. You were next to this young man(Leeper). How tall do you think he actually is, and did he say what position he expects to play for the Trojans?

You got me. I did not check his height but he is tall. We did not discuss the position he expects to play. If I see him again I will ask him.

Are you trying to spoil my birthday?

I've seen him up close, and I believe he's a true 6'9". And he has a lot of filling out to do. Reminds me of Jake Yancey when Jack was a freshman. And remember Jake got up to around 245 his junior season.04-cheers

Wait a minute. We'll have to break him of that horrible habit of passing the ball back out to the three point shooters. If he does that here, he would be breaking a long time tradition of our big men never passing the ball back out. Derrick will teach him the ropes.04-cheers
