I really think the republicans are going to screw this up. That will leave us solely in the hands of the democrats. Then when the economy craters a year from now (and I'm expecting 2011 or 2012), the democrats will have nobody to blame. What economic "progress" we see right now is a really poor return for the amount of money pumped in through TARP and "stimulus," and when someone realizes that the bills are going to come due some day, I think our goose will be cooked.
At that point, I sincerely hope the American people come to their senses and realize that NEITHER the theocratic Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld republicans nor the socialistic Obama/Reid/Pelosi democrats have led us anywhere remotely close to the proper track. Somehow, I doubt that, too.

I predict that IF the Obama Administration/Democrats hit a "pothole" in the next 6 months, it will likely be in the realm of foreign relations/terrorism rather than economics. We've had 4 domestic terrorist incidents in the last year and in 3 of them they allowed the trigger to be pulled/the fuse to be lit. If the Times Square bomb had gone off, we still wouldn't know who did it - all the evidence that led to the bomber would have been blasted to smithereens - car, keys, video. Holder still cannot say "radical Islam", and Napolitano thinks bravery by passengers validates the job she isn't doing. Gitmo is still open, terrorists are untried, and this Adminstration is on the knife edge of public opinion. If the next six months are smooth, the Dems will not be hurt badly in November, but if there is an attack, or if the economy falters or if there is another environmental disaster(hurricane season is almost upon us), or anything that fits the definition of pothole, then Katie bar the door.

Try not to sound hopeful about those chances.
I'm more upset that we wasted an insane amount of news coverage on the idiot would-be terrorist. I would relegate these idiots to page 30 by law so they can't get their sick satisfaction of actually terrorizing.
Ok I don't actually advocate that kind of law, but in emmie's idealized world we wouldn't give these guys 5 minutes on the evening news, because that is what they want.

Emmie, don't get hopes comfused with expectations or predictions. I hope that the Republicans can do well in November without loss of life, liberty and property, but I expect that if Obama/the dems hit a pothole, it will more likely come from this type of situation than a financial one. The track record is not so good. I hope it is getting better. Maybe it is, marginally - the discussion on modifying Miranda rights and the authorization to assassinate an American citizen/enemy combatant shows they are at least cognizant that their approaches need modifying, whether or not one thinks these are proper steps. The original article was speculation on the Democrats chances in November, and the author said they could "hit a pothole" on the way - I was just giving my opinion of which pothole is most likely, if indeed there is one. I do not believe that the economy will be that big an issue in November, but it might.
I don't think the volume of media coverage was a problem, although most of it was inane and repititious. Coverage of a failed attempt was the least of the terrorists' goals. Coverage of a successful event with horrible loss of life and massive property damage in yet another symbol of America was the main point. This is not the same as some guy getting upset over a divorce settlement. We, the American people need to know how the war on terror is going, and how it will impact us individually and collectively.
