Does anyone know
if Derrick is even intending to play another year. We all assumed that, but if he finishes up he might not want to. Anyone know?

That's a good question. Maybe we'll hear something soon.

My guess, and of course it's only a guess, is that if he gets the fifth ring and will be out of fingers and a thumb without going to another hand, that he might think it's a good time to retire. Especially if Phil Jackson decides to do the same.

I think he was talking about Derrick Bails, not Derek Fisher.

My bad. Is there some good reason why Derrick Bails wouldn't want to play if he is eligible? Most basketball players have a hard time giving up playing, not the opposite.

I just hope he is able to graduate this summer, which would, as I understand it, make him eligible for one more year. I'd love to see him back, but should he receive his degree I believe he would be the first player under Coach Sheilds to have started and finished his career at UALR with a degree. Assuming Matt graduates next May, he would be the second. I can't remember any other player accomplishing that in the past seven seasons.

Are you sure about that stat? I have no evidence to the contrary, but it seems like it would be unlikely. I'm assuming that you are referring to kids that begin as freshman and graduate, which of course would not include transfers and JUCOs. Still that stat is hard to believe.

RE: Does anyone know
Fisher was interviewed on PTI yesterday. He was asked if he expected Phil Jackson to return next season. Fisher strongly implied that he hoped he would be back, that whether or not he(Fish) was still on the team most likely depended on Jackson being back as coach.

I can't think of any other players that began as freshmen at UALR in the past seven years and stayed four or five years and graduated. Maybe someone else can think of someone, but I don't think there has been anyone. I'll go back and check the rosters and see if I can figure that out.
P.S. I went back and checked and assuming Derrick and Matt get their degrees, they will be the first two to achieve this under Coach Shields.
There have obviously been many others who graduated, but none who started here as freshmen and continued as Trojans for their entire careers.

I didn't realize it was that bad, but I think that speaks volumes. We hear so much praise from some about how Steve graduates players. But the fact that no freshman signee in seven years have finished their careers here is interesting.

Pretty sure Jerry is right about the 4 year players.

You can easily check it for yourselves. Go to the official board, and click on the rosters. You can go all the way back to Steve's first season and check the rosters. You will find this stat to be accurate.
