"They can take theirs and beat yours, or they can take yours and beat theirs". All we know is that Porter didn't win at Iliinois State and Sidney didn't win here. Would that have changed with more time? Guess we'll never know, will we.
Of course we'll never know what Sidney would have done, or what Porter would have done had he stayed, or what Porter would have done had he not been fired at Illinois State. We'll also never know what Coach K would have done coaching the Little Rock Trojans.
But, from what I saw in one year with Sidney, he was totally lost as what he needed to do in the heat of the game. I remember several time teams were making pretty good runs, and Sidney seemed lost as whether or not he needed to call a time out. I have no doubt Sidney knew the game, even knew how to coach the game(do all the aspects fo the game in practice), but lacked whatever it is that great coaches have in the ability to manage the game once it was being played.
In my opinion, no, Sidney never would have gotten close to winning 18 games. He didn't have what it took to make those decisions quickly during the heat of battle, or if he did, he didn't show it.

I believe Sidney was intelligent enough to find an experienced assistant who could help him with game decisions while he matured as a coach.
Had he stayed, I believe that's what would have happened, and he would have had some success here. How much I can't say, but I believe he'd have done better that a 4 win season.
