"The Big Ten has declined to confirm the $22 million per team figure"..
"What it has released is a figure of $220 million ($20 million per school) for 2010 that covers revenue from national television contracts, bowl games, the NCAA basketball tournament, licensing and the Big Ten Network."

So, is it really that lucrative for a school like ND to join the Big Ten if that $20 million per school number includes not just the TV money (BTN and other networks) but bowl games, NCAA basketball tournament money and the licensing of apparel (in other words, all possible revenue sources)?

Is that $22 million per team via TV figure that has been thrown out overblown and a myth? It seems so.

It’s may not be much for ND but for the rest of us a lot more than we get from our conference.

Any school that is joining or considering joining the conference will know the actual value. It only hurts our guessing ability for us not to know.

Just fyi, I believe the original source for that number is this Outside the Lines segment:

I've read it's about $14.5M, plus bowl game payouts.

Not a surprise for those who read my BTN threads on the SyracuseScout Board and linked here in a thread started by Texan Mark.

I do not believe licensing apparel is "conference" revenue, so that would not be part of the $20 million per school.

As for your question, only ND can decide if it is worth it or not.

But I do know that with the BTN that is a figure that will likely rise in the near future, moreso with ND, but even without ND - whereas ND's revenue will remain basically static until the next NBC TV contract is negotiated. Then there is the possibility of it also being reduced dependent upon how things go for the Big East in terms of whether or not there will be a split.

Cheers,
Neil
