Don't think Ol' Johnny (let's play Wofford) Swofford doesn't sit on his perch daily daydreaming about just such a scenario......

The power shift that occurred after ACC expansion wasn't quite what the "Big 4" was hoping for, I'd bet.....

There has been a power shift in the ACC?
If you are speaking of political power, each of the 12 schools in the ACC has equal voting rights. And if you know anything about the past "politics' of the ACC you surely realize that the North Carolina schools don't often vote as a bloc.
If, however, you are speaking of athletic power in the ACC.......things just have not changed. In the last 10 years (through 2009), almost 70% of all ACC championships have been won by either UVa, Dook or North Carolina.

What about football, the primary thing that's driving all this talk of change?

I don't live anywhere near NY, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express. And IMO, I don't care what conference UConn or Syracuse or BC or Rutgers are in - the Northeast Megalopolis will not be lining up to watch college football the way they do in Big Ten country.

Not when you have the Giants, Jets, Bills, Patriots, Eagles, Sixers, Celtics, Knicks, Nets, Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Devils, Rangers, Flyers, Bruins, Islanders, and on and effing on to choose from. That is pro sports country.

With all due respect, I live in CT & you're telling me how things work in CT?

What the heck does "the NY sphere of influence" mean as it relates to college sports? There are no major college I-A schools in NY. And certainly none with "a sphere of influence" that extends into CT.

If people in Fairfield County follow their alma maters first, what do the alums in other major metropolitan areas do who are transplants? The NYC metro area is not the only place in the country with transplants. Do you do the same analysis everywhere else?

And what do alums of schools without I-A programs watch on TV? There are plenty of those people here in CT. And do you really think that none of those people are buying tickets to UConn games?

Again with all due respect, you don't know a thing about Fairfield County or anyplace else in CT.

Your personal information indicates that you live in the Mountain Time Zone - since the first time you joined the board you were wildly putting down the University of Nebraska this (MT) would make perfect sense for someone living in Colorado.

I live in Fairfield County - I live about two miles from the Governor's home in Brookfiield off Route 25. A good friend owns a couple of sports bars and actively supports UCONN athletics -- he doesn't need to market UCONN basketball games but UCONN football has no more of a following than ND. Keep selling boys maybe it becomes fact like the Rutgers guy who keeps selling that Rutgers delivers New York City.

Check out the Albany area and Buffalo area and see how much they care about Syracuse.

Im not so sure about Albany, although I would think there is a good amount of support there. But Buffalo, cares alot about Syracuse. I work in Buffalo a couple of days a week, and I see more SU gear there than anyone else. If you dont think that Buffalo cares about SU, you dont know what you are talking about, at all.

Precisely....didn't think I had to distinguish the conversation between football and say, women's soccer.....

You know, though, I guess "power shift" was a poor choice of words, since only one of the "Big 4" has had any sort of ACC "power" since 1979 or so....

However you want to qualify it, doubtful that Johnny (s)Wofford envisioned such domination by the "newbies" in football as has occurred since the ACC opened its hallowed doors through expansion......

And UConn fan...you realize Syracuse draws sellout or near sellout crowds when they play basketball vs Canisus/UAlbany/Siena/etc when they play in Albany and Buffalo's big downtown arenas? TWC carries SU games on a local sports cable in both markets. No doubt Buffalo is Bills/Sabres territory but Syracuse is followed there as the #1 college team

Following is a partial list of radio stations that broadcast SU games. It doesnt take a genius to figure out that radio stations would not be paying for the rights to broadcast these games if folks in those particular markets didnt care about that team. Notice that stations in Albany and Buffalo must see some benefit in broadcasting the games there. I cant imagine that they would be broadcasting those games because nobody cares.

AFFILIATE LIST (as of August, 2009)

Station Frequency Market

WGY-AM 810 Albany
WOFX-AM * 980 ALBANY
WAUB-AM 1590 Auburn
WEBO-AM 1330 Binghamton
WEB)-FM 107.9
Binghamton
WWKB-AM 1520 Buffalo
WVMT-AM 620 Burlington, VT
WCGR-AM 1550 Canandaigua
WENI-AM 1450 Corning
WXHC-FM 101.5 Cortland
WFLR-AM 1570 Dundee
WENY-AM 1230 Elmira

You may also be interested in knowing that both Albany and Buffalo's daily newspaper websites have direct links to the Syracuse University Website. Both newspaper sites link to their local college sites and Syracuse. Would that be because noone in those markets care about SU?

Oh I'm not doubting there's fans in those area especially for Cuse Basektball. I'm just saying compared to Fairfield county (the region we've been discussing) for Uconn its not much at all.

I lived in Albany area for 4 years. The people there care about Yankees, Giants, Red Sox, Patriots (you'll be amazed at the amount of Mass sport team fans there). There's some interest in Cuse basketball (Especially since they won the NC when I was there) but amazingly there's more Siena fans there. They're very big on College hockey there too. Cuse football though? Not much a peep.

I had a GF I visited frequently in Buffalo. Nothing but Bills and Buffs there.

There's definitely interest but less than whats being lead.

It is true that ND is bigger than Uconn in Fairfield county. The program is young though. You don't just convert decades of fandom just because you're in state. CT has one of the highest Catholic populations in the country (percentage wise) so its a natural fit for sports fans to align themselves with ND since there was no major in state program.

Unlike Rutgers in NYC though, its inevitable that Uconn become much bigger than ND in Farifield county as time passes. Much of the CT ND fans are quite old.

Florida State, Va. Tech, Miami and BC were asked to join the ACC to boost ACC football prowess. Why wouldn't anyone (including Swofford) expect those 4 schools to excell in football?
Which of the "big 4" has had "power" since 1979? I am confused by your point.
