This is a bunch of crap. I think NIU should try to get the money back, either way!

You can't just get out of a contract like that by lying, it is illegal and it makes us look silly, especially for leaving and taking an associate coaching job.

I was previously an Owens supporter, but after her poor display of ethics I'm glad to see her leave.

I'll tell you this much from talking to Owens when she left. There was a pain in her voice.

Now this pain could have been knowing the whole truth wasn't coming out. But this pain could also have been more. I keep going back to this quote from her: "Coaching is in my blood,” Owens said. “I don’t feel like I can step away from coaching. I feel like I need to step away from coaching at NIU. Right now, I’m going to just take a little break. Right now, this is the best decision at this time.”

Owens was honest. She said she was going to keep coaching, that it is who she is. But she said the best thing for NIU was for her to leave. There's still more to this story that we don't know yet and that we may never know. It may be that Owens knew she wasn't going to come back and so when she saw she could leave early and let new blood take over the program now, instead of waiting two years, she thought it was best for the program. Perhaps a personal situation developed within the department where Owens could no longer effectively work at NIU. There are a host of things to explain what happened, as this is a multilevel story for Owens. NIU is her home as a player, a student and a coach. She has friends here, like Eddie Williams. She has other friends here, however, like Robert Collins who are also leaving. A lot of dimensions to try and and understand and we won't fully until someone is willing to talk.

I think Owens and Compher came to an agreement that Carol would step down. She probably immediately got on the phone and called all her contacts. ND's coach was probably happy to have her back. By the tone of Owen's comments, she did not want to leave but I think was forced out. Glad she has a good repore with the ND coach.

RE: Carol Owens Gone
let's see---not winning like she wanted ate her up--feeling possible pressure at NIU--luke warm connection to Compher--hints that she must "win or else"--Muffin calls--matches money or close to it--can return to elite national program with all its resources--maybe getting out of town ahead of a possible posse was inviting--what would YOU have done?

as far as the $75 grand...peanuts if it serves an amicable divorce....all save face--NIU comes out sounding good--CO sounds good--Compher didn't stir up a hornet's nest by firing a favorite daughter. sounds cheap to me...

anyone advocating a lawsuit doesn't understand how the world works...I am sure there was an agreement with Compher--thank you for your service, good luck--and it protects against a possible future buyout--not to mention, NIU loses in a lawsuit--bad publicity, probably won't win as there are "outs" in contracts and, even if win, only get about $30K after lawyer fees and expenses and months of haggling--how silly would that be while someone is on campus trying to build a program. It also looks petty which wouldn't help recruiting future coaches or players.

There's a more immediate and sensible explanation you're bypassing completely.

Seems to me that the pain you describe could simply be the difficulty of losing a job she wanted and having not succeeded at a job she very much wanted to succeed at.

For all of us in the normal world, losing a job hurts- but in sports world losing a job almost always comes with the sting of black and white results that say whether or not you failed.

All things being equal, the simplest explanation is usually the right one.

Ed Mathey really only makes 65K? I'd have expected a division 1 baseball coach to make a bit more than that.

Maybe the least concern that a head coach has...is coaching. The recruiting and administrative loads on a head coach can be job killers.
I think Carol Owens met the Peter Principle head on and lost. She is still a good person and is very, very fortunate to fall back on the job she left to try to be a head coach. It also says something about her value as a top assiatnt that ND welcomed her back so quickly. It does though, make the "personal reasons" justification for her departure look lame.
If they truly existed, do you think Muffet McGraw at ND would have rehired her so quickly?

She was "personally" offended that Compher asked her to leave.

Look at her quote in the ND press release.. Made me chuckle

"I am very happy to be back at Notre Dame," Owens said. "It's a place that is so dear to my heart and the people there have been wonderful to me.........

I think Owens does not have the makeup or the deep desire to be a Head Coach. I think she was looking at a not very good team coming back with no decent recruits on the horizon. Goin back to ND is like going back to a safe place. ND recruits itself. I think she has had this in the works for a while. I don't think there is anything wrong with this as some are destined to be head coaches and some are not. I do not think she will ever be a HC again

Timing is everything.

I posted there was likely something more coming following the resignation & smelling something yet in the mix following her sudden resignation.

This arrangement was likely negotiated many weeks ago, before the resignation. Good for her. She has positioned herself for greater steps upward, something which was not likley in her future with NIU.

Face reality. Who among us would NOT have pursued the option she did?

What it does say to me & other interested in following her?
Building a winning team at NIU is much harder than many admit to and comprehend.

Her contract calls for her to cough up some $ if she leaves for another job. Technically she happen to get a job two weeks after leaving, I'd like the admin. to pursue the fine, let overrated ND pay the bill...

you are being silly, film guy....did you read compher's statements in the press release? how would those words sound in court? not to mention, have YOU seen the contract? a contract can be mutually terminated upon any agreement the two parties wish...that was undoubtedly done, for whatever reason, in this case...it ain't like compher wanted her to stay....
