I was watching the Arkansas Wings game that
was on Channel 7 the other day, and it occurred to me that there are a number of fine players on that team, and we're not going to get even one of them. It seems to me with our great facility, and being close to some of these kids homes, with any kind of recruiters we should be able to sign some of them from time to time.

It makes me sick to see these kids who could be stars for us, and we don't seem to have anyone who can recruit them. Most D1 schools in an area like ours would continously get one or two players a year out of the state who are close to being one of the top players. If the Razorbacks don't get them, then it's my opinion they should belong to us. We will never be a viable program until we have a coaching staff that can sign some of these kids. I would hope that this staff can do it, but so far, they haven't been able to.

Think back when Porter was here. We got players like Too Tall and Jake Yancey out of Arkansas. It can be done. We're just not doing it.03-banghead

I don't think Too Tall was much of a player until he was a 5th year senior- thus my hope is that Derrick will do the same. I can't remember a whole lot about Jake other than he got hurt before he reached his potential. I don't know who we might be recruiting locally. Isn't there a kid on the Wings named David Rivers? I thought he was the son of the ex-UALR player but I don't know for sure if that's the case.

With Rivers getting interest from Baylor, Nebraska, UAB, and Wichita State, it would be a neat trick to get him. If he really wants to stay close to home I guess that it would be possible. I sure liked what I saw of that kid on the broadcast last Friday night.

Do you know if he is the son of the ex-UALR player by the same name? I really doubt that would be the major factor in his decision anyway- but I guess it couldn't hurt.

I don't know, but he's a heck of a player. It just kills me to see talent in our own backyard that we can't sign.03-banghead

The only David Rivers I can remember played against us for Notre Dame in the Dance. We had Mike and E.

You're right. Somewhere I remember hearing he was the son of Mike Rivers. No idea if it's true. Obviously, if he is Mike's son and Mike had been a Chickenhawg we never would have heard the end of it.

Not that I necessarily would want them to go to our biggest rival, aren't 2 of the "big 3" from you neck of the woods? I think Jonesboro and East Poinsett County. All the talk is whether or not they will be Chickenhawgs. Never hear anyone even mention ASU, which would irritate me if I were a Red Wolf fan. I believe they certainly would get some better coaching in Jonesboro.

The word on the street is that Mickelson wants to play for one of the elite programs like UNC, Duke or Kansas (first choice might be UNC). No doubt it would be a great thing for stAte to sign a player of that ranking, but alas that is not likely. That should be no more frustrating to us than Ross from LR being commited to ua since the 9th grade.

I am confident Brady will sign at least 2 very good high school players in November. It will be nice from a pr standpoint if they are from in state.

Sounds like Mickelson has a good head on his shoulders. He will have to overcome the pressure to be a pig. If he has a chance to go to an elite basketball program and prestigious academic school like Duke or UNC he shouldn't pass it up. My younger son goes to Kansas, and while it doesn't have the academic reputation of the others it is a very good school with a beautiful campus- I think Lawrence has the only hills in all of Kansas.
