The 5-5 until a goal can take forever. It's one thing to stay up for a double or triple-overtime game during the play-offs. I can't imagine doing that for any one of 82 regular season games. Not to mention the logistical nightmare it could cause when a team plays back-to-back games in different cities. A Western Conference game could easily finish up after 1:00 AM local time for a team like Detroit.
The 4-on-4 could take just as long, and changes the way the game is played. A quicker, puck possesion team gains an advantage over a physical team that likes to clog things up with a 5-on-5.
you act like this would happen all the time and that OT would last forever. Baseball has an endless OT system and it seems to work out ok. Also, the chances that each team would play the next day aren't great. It's probably around 50/50

Just making sure, but you do know hockey no longer ends in a tie in the AHL and NHL, right? Heck, even the NFL still has regular season ties.
yeah i know. and i also know the NFL has ties. I'm not gonna give them a pass
I have a problem with the NFL way of trying to end ties. The way they do it, the teams that wins the toss has better than 90% success rate at winning the overtime. I don't like seeing a flip of the coin determining a winner. If it's going to come down to that, why play the game at all. Just get everyone together, flip a coin, and be done with it...
It's actually only 60% (and they've changed the rules now).

You can't really compare extra innings in baseball to overtime in hockey. There's no way you can tell me 3 extra innings of baseball has the physical effect an overtime period has on its players.

Technically they've just changed it for the playoffs, but it's expected to be expanded to the regular season at the next round of meetings.
This is the way I understand it. If the team that receives the kick scores a touchdown on the opening possession, game over. If they only get a field goal, they kick off and the other team gets a possession - a touch down they win, a field goal they kick off & it becomes sudden death, no score and they lose. The one thing I'm not certain about is if the first team doesn't score on the opening possession can the second team win on a field goal on their first possession.

A FG no longer wins the game in OT on the first possession. The other team gets a shot at scoring if the first team kicks a FG. Only a TD scored on the initial possession wins the contest outright. There's more to it. But I don't remember...

i realize. that's why i added the part about them not playing the next day. in baseball most teams would probably be playing the next night. In hockey however, that's not always the case.

It wouldn't be points for a regulation loss. It's points for making it to overtime.

Winning in regulation isn't the same as winning in a shootout.

How about the Canadiens? What a run for the bottom seed. I don't even like hockey & I'm impressed.
One question for the Penguins, if you are going to schedule a "white out", shouldn't your team be the ones wearing the white sweaters?

I just might have to become a hockey fan. Philly just came back from being down 3-0 in the series & 3-0 in the final game to move on to the finals.

It's a good thing the Rangers didn't get in. The Caps would have likely swept them! Where else would you get a #7 vs. #8 in a conference finals except hockey. I freakin love it!

Can the Flyers do it? I must admit that comeback in their last series was a major ego boost.
Sharks need to even it up.
