Tony Cross resigns (women's bb coach)
26 yr head coach resigns. I know women's hoops isn't a high priority, but the fact he was around for 26 years is significant. I don't go out of my way to attend women's games, but would try to make it early for the men's when there were DH's and it seems it recent years there was a lack of fundamentals and he didn't seem as interested. The article in the tennessean is much more detailed but the bottom line is they say he wasn't forced out but he felt it was time for a change. I agree.

I hope for the best for Coach Cross. It will be interesting to see where we go for a Head Coach; as the Tennessean points out, only Betty Wiseman and Coach Cross have held the reigns for us in 42 years!

From what I had heard previously on campus, this has been the wishes of the players for some time now. I also heard a few years back he was applying for other coaching jobs openly while he was coaching at Belmont and when no one offered him he stuck around. I hate seeing a coach walk but from the sound of things it was best for all parties involved.

There have been large factions of players wanting him gone for many years across many graduating classes of players. I am not saying they are right or wrong, but that is definitely true. I know a couple of our greats who will certainly say that.

That being said, good luck to Coach Cross! It will be interesting to see how Belmont goes about hiring a coach at a visible program. Haven't really had to do that.

It's for the best. That's all I'll say.

However, I'm excited at the thought of having some new fired up coach take over and start a new era for Belmont women's basketball.

Not smart to hate Tony Cross for that.

You should direct your anger toward the president and whoever else decided that Belmont does not need a practice gym. Can you name a D-I school that is serious about athletics and does not have a true practice gym?

Volleyball, both basketball teams, and (for some inexplicable reason) baseball and cheerleading get stuck taking over the students' gym whenever a concert, event, or presidential debate go down in the Curb Event Center.

So who does Belmont go after? I'm sure it's not a huge priority but ETSU's women have gotten some play over them being in their golden era. I know of a Senior Women's Administrator in Johnson City that would make ya'll a great coach.

Have any Belmont folks talked to Mark Campbell? He's won four NAIA titles in six years, and the leap isn't nearly as big as the one Rick Insell made at Middle.

Excellent question, and one that I don't have the first clue about. You'd probably like us to take your President and AD as well. 03-wink

As for Mark Campbell, again I confess I have no idea who has won the NAIA women or men's championships recently. Sounds like he at least knows how to win. He's not a former Lip player is he? We already have one former Lip player on a basketball staff and your baseball coach is a former Belmont baseball player so I guess it's not completely out of the question.

We'd be glad if someone came in and had the success Insell has had at Middle.

Hey our current Admins would give BU great tennis and a medical school. I could also give a girl I went out with a few times all kinds of grief about it. I think she still works over there.
