All Depaul is doing for Big East is taking up a spot for a school that could come in with all sports like Memphis. Depaul hasn't been competitive since they joined the Big East. South Florida atleast can say they reached a post season tournament. Depaul can't say that anymore.

I see this type of comment all of the time and it's likely deserved in terms of purely on-the-court matters. However, everyone needs to realize that DePaul's primary motivation for being in the Big East has very little to do with basketball and everything to do with aligning itself with the Catholic schools that it believes are or wants to be its institutional peers. At the same time, we know that no football school would every willingly give up a spot in a BCS conference, so why would any basketball school give up a spot in a power conference? It just doesn't happen. The main goal of DePaul for many years was to align itself with schools like Georgetown, Villanova and St. John's and they're banking on the fact that if the BE splits up, that association will continue no matter what. This is all about DePaul's national position as a Catholic institution as opposed to a basketball program. There is absolutely NFW DePaul gives that up on its own.

I think you're thinking of UConn and Villanova. We only play at the Verizon Center in downtown DC.

This is not true. A few games are still played at McDonough Arena; I was at the ODU-Georgetown game played there a couple months back.

Okay, I'll rephrase - We certainly don't play there with any kind of regularity, usually no more than one or two times a year, the ODU game was one of the few times we did. By comparison, just doing a quick runthrough of their schedule on ESPN, Nova plays about 66% of their home games at The Pavilion and the remainder of mostly big games at the Wachovia Center. UConn plays about 40-45% of their games at Gampel and the others at XL. That's a much higher ratio than Georgetown's at McDonough but you're right, I was misleading by saying we 'only' play at the VC. I think the point still stands though.

No. DePaul can win. But, they don't know what they want to be. DePaul is a big commuter college. They need to recruit local city kids who want to stay home. DePaul isn't going to be successful recruiting suburban kids. They need to admit Chicago Public League kids. When Kennedy was allowed to take guys like Richardson, Lance Williams, etc., DePaul won. When the administration refused to admit guys like Sam Cassell, they lost. That is why I think a guy like Theus, who has credibility in the city and is a terrific recruiter, would be a slan dunk hire. He could get the city kids and provided DePaul admits them, he could win big.

Bingo.

I laugh out loud when I see people writing stuff about DePaul's inability to compete. If DePaul went back to their roots and started readmitting kids from the Chicago Public League kids like Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, Skip Dillard, Teddy Grubbs, Quinton Richardson, Bobby Simmons, Steven Hunter (I think that he is a public guy as well) etc.; then they would be back amongst the elite teams in the Big East pretty quickly.

DePaul has also had some bad breaks over the years, namely by not offernig Dwayne Wade a scholarship, even though Wade wanted to attend DePaul. And having guys like Kevin Garnett and Eddie Curry turning pro rather than attending DePaul.

I think that a guy like Todd Bozeman would have DePaul up and running in no time flat.

This ain't the 40s, or even the 70s. This ain't even in the same century. We'll see what develops over time...
