In looking back, I guess comparing Sidney
to Joe Foley was like comparing Wally Pipp to Lou Gehrig. I didn't realize, but Coach Foley won 13 games his first season, as opposed to 4 for Sidney. So O.K. It might have taken Sid a little longer than Joe to get to the 20 win mark. But we'll never know. Maybe Sidney was a quick study and could have done it his second season. Or not.04-cheers

I never believed coaching mattered all that much. Then I saw Porter take Sidney's players from 4-24 to 18 wins. Don't know if Porter was a "great" coach but it was a night and day difference between he and Sidney. I guess I realized at that point that coaching does matter. That's why I think hiring Corliss is a joke, made purely for PR purposes. Sure Corliss is a different person and may do fine. But the track record for these types of hires is very poor.

I doubt that many here(unless they're real baseball fans like Scotto, and Pappy is pretty knowledgeable of the history of the game)that will know the relationship between Wally Pipp and Lou Gehrig. No, they weren't queers. That's not the answer.

For those uninformed, Wally Pipp was the starting first baseman for the NY Yankees. He had to sit out a game or two with some sort of injury or illness, and Lou Gehrig took his place. Gehrig went on to become a Hall of Famer, and Pipp never got back into the starting lineup.04-cheers
