An ugly loss for UC

UC will be the No. 11 seed in the Big East Tournament and will play at 9 p.m. Tuesday at Madison Square Garden against the No. 14 seed, still to be determined as I write this.
After the game today, Cronin objected to what he considered an ambush of his players when they were asked in the media room why they’ve struggled down the stretch for the second year in a row.
“We lost to Marquette in overtime,” Cronin said. “We lost on the road at West Virginia and had the game taken from us. We lost to Villanova, which could be a one seed in the last two minutes of the game.
“We just played our third game in seven days against three top 20 teams. We played a great first half. We could have had the lead. When was the last time we played like this? It’s not like they played bad (in the last six games).”
But they certainly played badly in the second half of this one.
Stephenson’s 11 field goals were three more than the rest of the team combined. Vaughn was invisible, with only three shots and two points on a pair of free throws. UC was outscored, 22-7, off turnovers, 36-28, in the paint and 11-6 in second-chance points.
