Mercer in A-Sun tournament - it's time for a change
This is just from my own personal experience. I've been a fan of the program since 2002-03 when I started school there. That year the team won the regular season title going 14-2 in ASUN play. I assumed all would be well in the A-Sun tournament -- I was wrong. This is when I got the first glimpse of how hard it is to win in a tournament setting. It takes desire, execution, and above all -- successful coaching. In that tournament (2002-03) the Bears won their first round game (beating a #8 seed JU). They then got embarrassed in the second round by Central Florida (a team they were 2-0 against in the regular season).
Since then Mercer has not won an ASUN tournament game. The only victory I've witnessed is #1 Mercer beating #8 Jacksonville.
It's been a long drought, and most defeats were by big margins.
Last year Coach Hoffman had the Bears within a point of Belmont, but still lost the first round game. This year has got to be a turning point. The team has the talent to win it all -- several teams do. However, this team has done some special things over the years beating big programs. They can beat a top 25 team on the road, but can't win an ASUN tourney game. Hopefully March 3rd or 4th, 2010 will be the day I see the Bears win an ASUN tourney game for the second time. It would end a drought spanning 7 years.
I want to wish the team good luck because I'm sure they want it now more than ever. Many of their careers are on the line in those games. Remember the other team playing D is trying to send you to the locker room permanently! The Mercer Bears are better than them. I've seen it with my own eyes. I'm confident in the players and Coach Hoffman.
History waits only for winners. Let's defend our court.
