Brandon Reed for ASU
The freshman made some unbelievable long range 3 pointers to keep ASU in the game with WKU tonight. A couple were the kind you say NO, NO, NO when he lets it fly (far out with a hand in his face) and then Yes, Yes, Yes when they swish through. Unfortunately, for the Wolves and their fans he missed the second of two free throws that would have given ASU the lead with about 6 seconds left in regulation.

ASU had a 5 point lead with a minute and half left. WKU hit clutch shots. They have some experienced players (mainly Slaughter) who just wouldn't let them lose.

Always helps to have at least three guys on the court who have played in three NCAA Tournament victories when you need a clutch play.

He's the type of player that could play at a higher level. Might not be a starter, but could be in the Top Ten players at a BCS school. Those are the players we don't get. I saw a kid come in for Auburn last night who normally plays a minute or two a game, and he made a terrific move to the basket, scored and made the foul shot. I thought that kid would be a starter and a star at a school like UALR, or even other Sun Belt schools.
We need to be able to sell those kids that they're better off playing as a starter and being a star in the Sun Belt then a one minute a game player at Auburn, or somewhere like that. Western, North Texas, ULL and others consistently have those type of kids, and it looks like Brady is getting some to ASU. Unless we start upgrading our recruiting, we're going to become a bottom dweller in the Belt, and that isn't a pleasant scenario for which to look forward.

In most cases, recruits will sign with the "best" school (athletic program) that offers them a scholarship. They are all stars in high school and believe they will be stars where ever they go to college. Not sure how much the "you will be a starter here, but languish on the bench there" works with recruits. I'm sure many would see that as "disrepecting" them and they might take the offer from a higher level program just to prove you wrong.

RE: Brandon Reed for ASU
I think you are correct MJS. I believe most recruits go to the best program willing to offer a scholarship unless they have some particular affinity. Brady said recently they started tracking Reed while they were at LSU and offered him in the early period when name programs hadn't made up their mind about him. Made no bones about the fact that without early signing ASU probably wouldn't have been able to get him after the senior season he had.
