Big loss for Marquette tonite. They really needed that home win. It slides their RPI to 70... trouble.

Took this off of a Pitt site but this is an amazing run for Pitt BB:

20 wins or more for a 9th straight year. .500 or better in the Big East for 9 straight years. 9 straight years of making the NCAA Tournament (assuming they make it of course).

One more thing, if Pitt (9-4) can get one more BE win, they will continue their streak of 20 and 10. That is 20 or more wins and 10 or more BE wins for 9 straight years. No one else in the Big East can make that claim over the past 9 years.

Nice...ok Cuse fan braggin now...come back and tell me when you have had 40 consecutive years of winning seasons...the worst being 16-13 and the other 39 at 19+ wins.

I think 35 of the remaining 39 seasons were 20 plus win seasons or some crazy number like that.

RE: Basketball Standings
I think Seton Hall is shaping up to have a very good chance to make the tournament.

Even if they lose to WVU tomorrow, the schedule shapes up nicely for them to win 4 straight to end the regular season. That would put them 10-8 in the BE. Their RPI now is 52, so in range for a possible at-large. I think Seton Hall is in decent shape to sneak in the tournament. They have 4 wins over Top 50 RPI teams. The downside being... they have no OOC wins of note, with Cornell being their best by far.

RE: Basketball Standings
Seton Hall's chances for the tounament may have been shot to ribbons with the cut to Jeremy Hazell's shooting hand. I seriously doubt he'll play against WVU, not after having a bunch of stitches in the middle of the hand he shoots with, and he was the only reason the first SH-WVU game went to OT. Without him, I think their chances of winning enough games to get NCAA notice went down the toilet...

Starting PG Eugene Harvey has a bruised right wrist too. That could be very bad news for the Pirates indeed. WVU likes to press, and a good PG comes in very handy for beating the press...

Seeing the actual standings makes me even more sick to my stomach about how the Cards finished the Nova, WVU, and Pitt games. 03-banghead

RE: Basketball Standings
With USF & Seton Hall losing today, both are likely out. Marquette really needs to win tomorrow on the road or they will be out come Monday morning.

  1. Syracuse 12-2
  2. Villanova 11-2
  3. West Virginia 10-4
  4. Pittsburgh 9-4
  5. Louisville 9-5
  6. Georgetown 8-6
  7. Marquette 7-6
  8. Cincinnati 6-7
  9. Connecticut 6-8
  10. Notre Dame 6-8
  11. South Florida 6-8
  12. Seton Hall 6-8
  13. St. John's 5-9
  14. Providence 4-10
  15. Rutgers 4-10
  16. DePaul 1-13

Tomorrow's games are Nova-Pitt & Marquette-Cincinnati.

I wouldnt say USF is out but beating Nova is a MUST now to have any shot at NCAA. With that said an NIT would be an improvement for our program

There are about 250 1A programs out there that wished they would be invited to the NIT...you should get a high enough seed to get at least one home game.

  1. Syracuse 12-2
  2. Villanova 11-3
  3. Pittsburgh 10-4
  4. West Virginia 10-4
  5. Louisville 9-5
  6. Marquette 8-6
  7. Georgetown 8-6
  8. Cincinnati 6-8
  9. Connecticut 6-8
  10. Seton Hall 6-8

  13. St. John's 5-9
  14. Providence 4-10
  15. Rutgers 4-10
  16. DePaul 1-13

The current top 4 are in great shape to stay there and receive the double byes since Pitt & WVU own the tiebreaker over UofL. Plus Pitt's remaining schedule is basically cruise control.

In the updated ESPN bracket out tomorrow, we'll have 7 in, and UConn will be the closest team out. Every team at 6-8 has a shot if they finish very strong, but I don't see anyone else making it realistically without a run in the Garden. USF, ND, and Seton Hall would all need to win out to finish 10-8. UC would have a shot at 9-9, but I don't see any of the 4 doing that.

UConn has a shot at 9-9, and that is more realistic, but far from a given. That'll start tomorrow night for them against WVU.

Marquette & UofL are far from locks as well. The Eagles need to win on the road this week. UofL would be well served to finish at least 2-2, however I'd say the odds of UofL winning are at best a toss-up in each of the 4 games.

EDIT: Villanova's record corrected.

The Big East has 8 teams in as of tonight via ESPN, with UConn in. It's looking more likely now, as the bubble seems to be pretty weak overall in my opinion.

Lunardi had Cincy as the 3rd team out and UConn as the 4th team out this afternoon. They just showed the revised bracket, and with the win Lunardi has UConn jumping the 7 teams directly in front of them at the link, placing them as the 4th to last team in. They still likely need to win 2 of 3, but that is looking more likely with their current play.

8 Big East teams in?

Current Seeds
1- Syracuse
2- Villanova, West Virginia
3- Georgetown
4- Pittsburgh
9- Louisville
11- Marquette
11- UConn

That is just such a mess. I think the Top 5 get some separation as the final 3 or 4 games are played out. But I now think that 6-9 all likely finish 10-8 and I have no idea how the mini-conference tie-breaker will go in terms of seeding for the BET.

Looking more and more like the Big East will get 8 bids instead of 7 with Seton Hall possibly getting 10 conference wins but not getting a bid.

Cheers,
Neil
