I'd really like to read the article, but I'm unable to pull it up.

Interesting. Are there many good trails in the Birmingham area? I know of Moss Rock and I have heard there is a trail at Oak Mountain State Park.

Lots of good trail at Oak Mtn - hiking, biking and equestrian

The Pinhoti Trail is a long one that begins at Cheaha State Park. I believe it is the one that could link to the AT.

There are others. The Sipsey Wilderness in NW AL has lots of beautiful spots among a network of trails. Then there's Little River Canyon Area too.
