RE: Mercer (Official Game Thread) - 02/04/10
WOW! I said to my wife at the beginning of the game that a lot more was at stake in this game than a conference win against a good team -- overall team excitement and pride for a bunch of new fans was on the line. If that game doesn't get a lot of those KSU fans back for Saturday's game, something is wrong with them. What a game!

I've got to tell you -- Mercer was nothing but class. Great group of fans, and I love what the schools are doing to intensify the rivalry. Florence is a stud. Thankfully, we had just a bit more in the tank than Mercer tonight.

Let's make it 7!!

I would bet if that's not a record it's damn close for offensive rebounds. WAY too many to count. It was sickening and it was the difference 100X over. I've also never seen so many close range floaters dropping, and dropping through as swishes. They just had more desire as a TEAM. Many Mercer players were at the best of the their ability. I don't want to just repeat what i said on the Mercer board... so just good win, it was all team desire.

I would agree that our players wanted it more tonight, but my point about not playing our best is that our two best offensive players (Markeith and Kurtis) played very subpar offensive games. I don't have the stats in front of me, but I think Markeith was 1-10 from the field, and Kurtis must have been 0-7 from three point land. He made some nice drives to the basket, and I remember him hitting 1 outside jump shot, but he couldn't buy a three. We shot 3-20 from three point land (at least that is what I remember last time I looked at the stats) and we didn't really get anything out of our press.

All I can say is wow. 2387 I believe was the announced attendance. If you weren't there you really did miss something. A typical Mercer/KSU like we all expected. And also, if it wasn't a rivalry before, I'd say it is now. Tempers were getting the best of coaches and players, Mercer brought their pepband, cheerleaders, and a pretty good sized student section, not to mention a ton of general fans. I don't know who all reads this, but I would personally like to thank the students of KSU for coming out. There were so many students there both student sections were full and many either stood along the rails at the top or sat somewhere along the sidelines. I mean I cannot say enough about tonight but Spencer Dixon, without him we lose tonight. They did an awesome job shutting down Markeith after he dropped 25 in Macon the other day. Wow, I mean, I just can't get over what I just experienced. This is what we all have been wanting. Some of you were around for the D-II days when we were dominating, but for us guys who weren't around back then, this is truly remarkable. They announced tonight it was the largest crowd in the history of the Convocation Center, so by default I'm sure that means ever, considering how small the Spec Landrum Center was.

Great to hear about the atmosphere Escalade. If any of you on the boards are on campus make sure to get everyone back on Saturday. This could be the spark we were looking for. In addition try to direct people to these boards. It would be nice to pick up some more fans here on the message boards. It can really add to the excitement when we all get together after the game to hi-5 each other.

Someone should talk to the marketing department about making a sign. It would help with fan retention if they are on here, and we can all continue to encourage one another during the down times, and laugh and cheer with each during the good times.

GO OWLS!

Edited because I finally got to look at a box score:

Markeith: 1-10 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line for 4 points
Kurtis: 3-12 from the fied, 0-5 from 3pt land, and 3-7 from the free throw line for 9 points

Combined: 4-22 from the field and 5-9 from the free throw line for 13 points. Yet we still are able to scratch out a win by hammering the offensive boards, and coming up with the big plays at the end of the game. Great job by the coaching staff, and great job by our team to win even when we weren't kicking on all cylinders.

Great game. For two of best players to have rough games and us to still pull out the win says a lot. JMac, Heramb, Spencer, Gibson, etc. all stepped up. This is the most satisfying win of the season thus far. I thought Coach Ingle did a FANTASTIC job managing the game as well as getting the players ready to play. The FANS, players, and coaching staff all their hands in this win. Whens the last time we've been able to say that?

And now, it's time to exact some revenge on Upstate tomorrow and carry this win streak back on the road!

Man the Marietta Daily Journal has us covered to the T. I like reading their stories better than ksuowls.com. Great breakdown of the game with the different runs each team had. http://www.mdjonline.com/view/full_story...eft_column

You really had to be there to fully enjoy the game. That was incredible. And it was the first time we've had a great atmoshphere like that and we won. We've had a few games where we had a great turnout but we always seemed to lose and lose pretty big.

It was a very good game, lots of lead changes, players getting chippy, coaches screaming at the ref's and a loud arena. I'm glad we won, because I always hate leaving arena's with a "beat (insert team) shirt when we lose.

Last thing i want to say, Mercer did beat us in what area. By far and away they have much cuter cheerleaders.

He has some fundamental issues to get by before he becomes truly one of the elite scorers in college, which could happen in about 2 years. His four points were attributed to early foul trouble and him playing more hesitant than usual on both ends. I won't short Mercer though as they showed a good double every time he touched it in the post.
Spencer is really coming on lately and looking to score. He'll be one of the elite scoring guards in the A-Sun by next year. I think he's definitely capable of at least 17 ppg by the time he graduates. He takes contact well and uses his angles.
Zadrian stepped up today as well, and it seems like the first time all year that he's made a big impact. He doesn't have any moves, he just out jumped people for some nice baby hooks.
Finally, props to Spencer, Matt, J-Mac for clutch FT shooting at the end of the game. Spencer hit 4 in a row, Matt 3-4 and J-Mac 2-2 in the final minute, if I recall.

Welcome Mr. Hunt. I am not sure that Spencer will be averaging 17 points by the time he graduates, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him in solid double figures. Kurtis and Markeith are better scorers where as Spencer does a lot of the little things on the court.

If you look at our offensive numbers over the past 8 games or so it is pretty hard to argue with what we are doing offensively. We have to be shooting close to 50%. I think Ingle likes to put his players in a position to go iso, and I know most big time players like being given that responsibility. However, it does make it nervous for the fan at times as the shot clock winds down. On the flip side it teaches our players how to perform under pressure. I think it is pretty evident over this winning streak that our guys can step up when they are called upon at the end of the game. We had troubles early in the year with this mentality, but now our guys are starting to grasp it, and gain confidence in the meantime.

what i was impressed about last night we didnt shoot well and we still pulled out the win. I'm sure if i told everybody on the board that Marketih would be 1-10, and that we would be 3-20 from three point range, everyone would of predicted a loss.

I was looking forward to seeing Markeith put up a national rookie scoring leader performance with dunks and dominant play. I did not get that. I'm glad we didn't need that.

Just as I post to Facebook the link for this site, the forum screws up... go figure.

Mike, welcome to the boards. We get the name. Some of us may be alumni but we weren't born yesterday. 03-wink

The question for Mr. Hunt is whether he even realizes what movie that name originated from....

After watching the Mercer @ Campbell game today I was thinking about crowds. That Kennesaw crowd in this game was one of the best I've ever seen in the ASUN. Mercer has had some nice crowds in the big matchups as well, but I really wanted to reiterate just how great that atmosphere was. I hope that is there again next year at both courts. It makes the game so much more enjoyable, as todays game with Campbell the crowd was never in it.

it really was a great crowd on both ends. Mercer fans were loud and much more respectful then any of the visiting crowds i've seen.

Since that game our past two we have lacked that emotion and intensity needed to compete.
