Official 2011 Football Recruiting Thread
This thread is for discussion of potential Huskies for the 2011 class

In the famous words of Walter Sobchak: "This is not 'Nam. This is recruiting. There are rules."

Rule #1: No Self-promotion/spamming. We are not a recruiting service and don't need to hear your pitch especially if NIU hasn't even offered you or your "best friend".

Rule #2: Only talk about prospects that NIU may be interested in. No one wants to read 10 straight posts about that obscure undersized fullback with a fake 40 time.

Rule #3: No bashing/personal attacks. These are 17-18 y/o kids we're talking about here. Do you remember yourself at that age?

Wow Bryant is huge...I don't see him winding up anywhere except one of the top programs, unless he's so huge he can't move.

Would you like to be the QB for Vernon Hills. You get to throw to Daniels and Spencer. Good blood lines.

Jud Wienke is an interesting name at QB. We recruited his brother John a few years back before he ended up at Iowa. John is now stuck on the Iowa depth chart behind James Vandenburg, another NIU recruit.

Am I wrong or does Scout have Peat Jr. as a 4 star, #9 DT in the nation? Nice to see we're after him although he's sure to get increasingly incredible offers. I'll be really interested to see what we can do at QB and WR in the 2011 class.

He was definitely a 3 stars and no rankings a couple days back, they must be looking more towards 2011 already. This would be huge for the program. With his dad being an ex player it is our best shot at getting a player of this magnitude.

Question on recruiting strategy. Should we offer all the top guys in Illinois even if we have a slim to none chance at getting them? Or do we already do that? A couple of years ago a LB from Joliet Catholic (Clancy I think, signed with Northwestern) came to a summer camp with another recruit and we told him he had a scholarship if he wanted it but it didn't sound like an official letter was sent to him.

Yes we will need to be in the QB recruiting mode for the 2011 class, however by the looks of the top 25 list, 2010 looked to be a much stronger class for recruiting QB's from Illinois. I still am surprised we did not grab 1 as a backup plan for Osei. I am not sure what Kill will do here, but we will definitely need to begin building young QB's and RB's in the 2011 class.

I think, absolutely speculation on my part, that he did have a back-up HS QB ready, but that he was more intrigued by the juco. And that he has at least some confidence in Hill or Lynch.

I would agree, we need to bring in a decent HS QB this year. I'd probably put WR and RB as a bigger need in my opinion though. With Meco leaving, we still have a ton of talent at RB, but most of them are upperclassmen at this point. WR still a question mark, although Moore and Ashford certainly show potential.

In practice, Anthony Johnson looked to me like he could be even better than Moore or Ashford. He was just so rail-thin that he absolutely had to redshirt and get some meat on his bones. He made Moore look like David Boston. Johnson was a seven-foot high-jumper in high school and really shined in the freshman-only team segments that Kill ended practice with in August.

Hill was dinged up and didn't get a lot of looks while I was there, but Lynch surprised me. I always showed up figuring that they would be shifting him to the secondary any day now, but he just kept hitting receivers with really nice precision. I think he outperformed the coaches' expectations. As far as we know, he was ticketed for safety until he played QB with that National Junior team and did well, earning himself a shot there. Thus far, he's gotten the job done (of course, I haven't seen anyone throw a pass in practice since August).

Kill supplemented all of the departures from the football team with extra scholarships handed out to the 2010 class.

We have 18 seniors this year, so that is going to be the starting number of scholarships that we have for the 2011 class. Expect a couple schollies to be extended to former preferred walk-ons if they manage to add an extra component to the team this upcoming season.

All of the players that wanted to leave the team have left. There isn't going to be some surprisingly huge recruiting class in 2011 like the most recent one.

There are several juniors who I could see hanging it up after the 2010 season so I expect us to have at least 20 schollies available for the 2011 recruiting class. By the way I get 18 seniors:

Chad Spann
Ricky Crider
Kyle Skarb
Connor Flahive
Nick Groeniger
Landon Cox
Ed Jackson
Nolan Owen
Josh Wilbur
Darnell Bolding
DJ Pirkle
Mike Krause
Alex Kube
Chris Smith
Kiaree Daniels
Patrick George
Mike Sobol
Garrett Barnas

What juniors do you see leaving?

I won't mention any names since I don't want to offend or embarrass anyone but there are some juniors who haven't gotten on the field to this point and most likely won't in 2010 either. Those are the ones you want to leave after their four years so you can get more new guys in the pipeline.
