Hoops Tournament format
I assume the Big South still has quarters, semis, finals at the higher seeds. Correct?

How do fans like that vs all games at one venue. A school's home floor vs a neutral site?

The biggest difference betw the Big South and A-Sun that I've witnessed as a fan is the basketball tournaments. The A-Sun being so spread apart geographically hurts attendance, especially in the first round. Looking forward to better tourney atmospheres when the Camels return!

RE: Hoops Tournament format
If it's at a neutral site, the regular season means nothing at all. I prefer being able to earn home court.

And the current format is...

Round of 8: Higher Seeds
Round of 4: at #1 seed (regardless of whether or not they won)
Final: Higher seed

RE: Hoops Tournament format
I love having the regular season results determine who hosts tourney games. Puts much needed emphasis on regular season performance. I also like having the finals at the home court of the highest seed. Almost guarantees a sell-out/loud/boisterous crowd which makes for a great atmosphere, rewards the higher seed, and looks great on TV. You'll see a lot of neutral site championships on ESPN (and I attended a few when the Big South held the tourney in Asheville and Roanoke before this current format), and if the teams in that game aren't local, then the arena is usually pretty dead.

I went to the 1987 Big South Tournament my senior yr at CU. It was held at the Savannah Civic Center and was hosted by Armstrong State. Baptist (as it was called then) beat the Camels by 1 in the championship, led by Heder Ambroise from Haiti....the earthquake reminded me of him a few weeks ago.

Also attended in 1988 at Winthrop and in 1992 at Anderson.

I like the Big South's current format.

The semifinals are played at the #1 seed. So right now Coastal Carolina would host both semifinals. We do this for TV purposes, as the games are shown on ESPNU and they aren't going to have two separate crews working at two different sites.

And then the championship game is played at the highest seed remaining. Our #1 seeds have always advanced to the championship game since moving to the new format, but theoretically the championship game would be played elsewhere if the #1 seed wasn't present.

Yeah, I like the format of the tournament now. I agree with WEF in that I like the emphasis it puts on the regular season.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy trips to Asheville or Roanoke when the tournaments were held in those cities. I enjoyed the travel (and especially the Friday off from school when we would go), but the atmosphere was definitely lacking unless the "host" team was playing.

That 1988 tournament in Rock Hill is my first real hoops memory (even though I had already been going to WU games at that point -- just don't remember them). I was 4 at the time and my Dad got us tickets for the whole tourney and after watching all the games, I was definitely a basketball junkie.

I agree that there's been no magic answer for the conference in neutral site venues, except for when/if the hosts make it through.. I like the home-court advantage setup currently in place (except for that Round of 4 junk- but I understand the logistical issues with televised games at that round) that makes the regular season mean something that much more..
