RE: OT: Top US Colleges --- Graduate salaries
Not really surprising some of the salaries but I suspect these may have a higher percentage of medical and engineering graduates in the numbers than liberal arts graduates. Most of the higher salaries tend to be in the larger more expensive cities such as New York, Boston and San Francisco. It would be interesting to see a break down of numbers between the various degrees that people make. All it takes is a few investment bankers making a $500 million in a year to schew the average. I did not realize that there were that many people make over $100K a year.

RE: OT: Top US Colleges --- Graduate salaries
I think the more important factor is return on investment (in terms of how many years the salary increase over a bachelors degree offsets the additional cost of a graduate degree). Obviously the public schools (if you're paying in-state tuition) would have an advantage here. Also agree that location is a factor. Cost of living in the northeast corridor and west coast is MUCH MUCH higher than the midwest.

Very true. While there is still some significant differences even when accounting for C.O.L. expenses, that does narrow the gap in reality. What I'm surprised by is $40k for DePaul, because while no NYC or San Fran, Chicago is not a cheap place to live.

Much of that is based on the city that the schools are located... cost of living in Cincinnati, Louisville, etc., is not that of NYC, Boston, etc. Therefore the numbers will be lower not matter what.

RE: OT: Top US Colleges --- Graduate salaries
If they really wanted to analyze it, they should remove this from the equation by making the salaries relative to the cost of living where the graduates live...of course, that'll never happen.

Other than that, how do they know this and what qualifies as mid-career? I know I've never shared my salary with the university or any other research group.

Georgetown's stat showing the $111,000 salary is merely subsistance living for the middle class in D.C., or any other big city. In the rest of America, outside the northeast and most major metropolitain areas, you're living high on the hog...

High on the Hog depends on how many kids you have and if your significant other works as well. COLA has a lot to do with those numbers, we all know that.

My sister is a religious nut who believes in large families, and thinks birth control is a sin. She's got 5 girls, and passed her beliefs down to her kids. She's got one married off, another pregnant and getting married, an unwed mother, a couple of grandkids, and a pregnant teenager. I've got no sympathy for her...

Sex is like politics. It takes no training at all to get the job, and once you've got the job, thought is optional...

It can be rough finding a higher-paying job as a DePaul undergrad even in Chicago (I went there for law school so I had a different experience than an undergrad, but I've been involved in hiring college grads for several large companies and firms with offices in the city). The very top tier starting salary jobs (i.e. investment banking) have hiring requirements similar to NYC - they're looking at Ivy League and Ivy League-caliber grads for the most part and they'll take a handful of the top people from places in the Midwest with highly-ranked business or engineering programs like Michigan, Illinois and Indiana. Regardless, those are really tough jobs to obtain even with the best academic credentials and they aren't that numerous.

It's the next tier (Big Four accounting firms, consulting firms, trading, finance and IT departments at large corporations) that hires a lot more college grads where DePaul is really getting smoked in terms of job placement these days. Virtually all of the Big Ten schools have a leg up in the Chicago market for those jobs and literally tens of thousands of them pour into Chicago every single year after graduation. You also have schools like Notre Dame and not-that-distant Big 12 universities (i.e. Missouri and Kansas) that send a disproportionate number of grads to the area. Certainly, it's not surprising that Illinois grads dominate a lot of Chicago companies and offices. However, I've worked at a number of those firms and run into more grads from all of the other Big Ten schools than DePaul. The school has a fantastic location, but if you have to pay anywhere close to full tuition there, I'd have a hard time recommending it over the average Big Ten school from an objective standpoint (even if it's out-of-state) if your goal is to work in Chicago for the "non-elite upper-level" jobs.

When I looked at the cost of living there compared to Jersey it feels like its a lot less.
