Question for Lousville folks
TexasMark's Tailgate Guide leads me to believe that that Highlands is probably the best place for a group of fans to go out after a football game. Does that sound about right?

Are there hotels in that vicinity?

Ideally, we don't want to have to drive after a night of drinking. The idea is to go to the game, drive back to the hotel, drop off the car, and then hit the bars.

Last time we went to Louisville we stayed Downtown. If I recall correctly it was a short drive from the hotel Dowtown to the Bardstown Road area. Is that right?

Alternatively, are there things to do Downtown these days that would make it worth just staying there?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Question for Lousville folks
No doubt the Highlands is a great area. Unfortunately not many hotels in that area. You might be able to get into a B&B in that area but I can't think of many other places to stay. There is a Quality Inn at Bardstown and 264 (Watterson Expressway) but not much else closer. If you chose that Quality Inn you could catch a taxi straight up Bardstown Rd and be in the Heart of the Highlands in 10 minutes.

Here is the link to the Quality Inn:

Hotel Info

If you choose to do this have the taxi driver take you to The Bambi Bar. Do the Bambi Beer walk. You'll have a great time.

If I can answer any questions, just PM me.

I lived in Louisville about seven years before moving to Memphis in 2000. Since I left, they added a new entertainment complex at 4th Street downtown. Don't know if that was around last time you were in town, 3601.

Does the convenience to downtown hotels make that a good second option Jim?

I love 4th Street Live...great place to party. I believe it's all in what you want. If you want the hot dance club party, you go to 4th Street Live. If you want the laid back bar scene, you check-out The Highlands. Honestly you'll get more of a feel of what Louisville is all about in Bardstown Rd Area because alot of the people you'll see at 4th Street are from out of town.

Here's a link to 4th Street Live.

Glad to hear that 4th Street Live hasn't killed Bardstown Rd.

3601, the closest thing I can compare the Highlands stretch of Bardstown Road to in Memphis is the Cooper/Young area, only it spans maybe two or three miles. Lots of great local restaurants, shops and bars. My mileage estimate may be a little off, but there substantially more to do on Bardstown Rd. than Cooper/Young. It's also surrounded by a much more prosperous neighborhood (not that I have ever felt unsafe in Cooper/Young).

RE: Question for Lousville folks
Another thing to consider is that the bars on Bardstown Rd are not that long of a cab ride from downtown, which would really open up the hotels available to consider. You'd need a cab both to and from the hotel to bars, but that may work better. I prefer the Bardstown Rd scene, as I'm a fan of open bars, and many of those have large outdoor areas as well during the warmer months, even into the fall. 4th St is more of a dance club scene, so it depends on what a group is looking for.

Knowing 3601...I think he is all about the laid back bars with tables and good food. Get a motel downtown and cab/drive Bardstown after you check out 4th. Louisville looks like a really cool city to spend a couple days in.

Fourth Street Live

As an outsider I have to confirm what Jim's saying about Fourth Street Live. Although I did have a good time the night we were down there. Since I was the only one in my group with knowledge of Louisville when I was in town last June, I opted for 4th Street Live since I knew we'd find ourselves something good to do.

And yes Louisville is a great town to spend a few days in. Looking forward to heading back for the Derby either this year or next.

Thanks for all of the help. Eveyone has been helpful. Mark, you are right...I'm more of a bar guy than a club guy. I can do clubs on special occassions with my wife, but this will be a trip with the guys.

We'll probably stay Downtown and cab to and from the Highlands. I've been to that area once before after a game. I remember a pretty mellow bar with a nice back patio. I recall that the back patio might have had a fountain on it, but I have no idea what the name of the place was.

RE: Question for Lousville folks
http://www.louisvillehotbytes.com/

This link is a very through, very in-depth guide to many places to eat in Louisville. The site is maintained by Robin Garr, a local food critic. The site rates local restaurants on a 1-100 scale and gives price range and contact information. Louisville has a lot of local/unique restaurants that offer very good food.

http://www.louisvilleoriginals.com/

This link contains a lot of information about more expensive, local restaurants. If you have a more refined palate or you enjoy more upscale dining, you might want to check out this list. Be warned though, many places on this list are in the higher price range ($30+ per person). Below is my recommendation for more upscale dining in Louisville (most require reservations).

Jack Fry's - 1007 Bardstown Road (502) 452-9244
610 Magnolia - 610 Magnolia Ave (502) 636-0783
Le Relais - 2817 Taylorsville Rd (502) 451-9020
Corbett's - 5050 Norton Healthcare Boulevard (502) 327-5058
Porcini - 2730 Frankfort Ave (502) 894-8686
Asiatique - 1767 Bardstown Rd. (502) 451-2749
Café Metro - 1700 Bardstown Rd. (502) 458-4830
Equus/Jack's Bar - 122 Sears ave (502) 897-9721
Park Place on Main - 401 E Main St (502) 515-0172
English Grill - 335 West Broadway (502) 583-1234
Havana Rumba - 4115 Oechsli Ave. (502) 897-1959
Stevens & Stevens Deli - 1114 Bardstown Road (502) 584-3354
The Irish Rover - 2319 Frankfort Ave. (502) 899-3544
Del Friscos - 4107 Oechsli Ave (502) 897-7077
Pats Steakhouse - 2437 Brownsboro Rd (502) 893-2062
The Oakroom - 500 Fourth Street (502) 807-3463

Below is a list for those on a more modest budget (I fall in this group). You don't need a reservation for any of these an a meal + drinks will run you $10-25 per person depending on what you order. None of them will break the bank and all have great food IMO. These are some of my favorite places to eat out in Louisville and I highly recommend each of them.

Cumberland Brews - 1576 Bardstown Rd. (502) 458-8727

Great microbrew with great food. I highly recommend the Bison burger or Chicken Cordon Blue sandwitch. Also, they serve Mead, femented honey, which is expensive (8.50 a pint) but delicious. The nut Brown Ale is also very good. Very unqiue, hole-in-the-wall type of place.

Brendan's Restaurant & Pub - 3921 Shelbyville Rd (502) 895-1212
http://www.brendanslouisville.com/

Lot of beer choices (5 dollar sampler is great) and outstanding food. Fish and Chip is awesome. Great atmosphere, especially for the 30-50 crowd. You get a lot of food for your money.

Cafe Mimosa - 1543 Bardstown Rd (502) 458-2233
http://www.cafemimosatogo.com/

If you want some Vitnamese/Japanese/Chinese, I'd hit up Mimosa. You get a lot of food for your money. The Vitnamese Curry and Rice in a Pot are both awesome, but the sushi was mediocre though. Great place to eat if you like Asian cuisine.

Homemade Pie and Ice Cream Kitchen - Multiple locations around town
http://www.piekitchen.com/

Pretty much the best place in Louisville to get a desert. Great local chain and one of my favorite places to stop when I get a sweet tooth. Like the name says, the serve homemade pie and ice cream. YOU MUST GO HERE WHEN YOU ARE IN TOWN.

Wick's Pizza Parlor and Pub - Multiple locations around town.
http://www.wickspizza.com/flash.htm

Local pizza joint that is a bit on the pricey side. Despite the cost, the pizza is excellent and some of the best in town IMO. I highly recommend the Chicken, Bacon, Ranch pizza or the mighty meaty wick. Good beer selection and the bar side has booth TVs to watch games (Bardstown location). Very snazzy place to grab a bit to eat.

Bluegrass Brewing Co - Downtown or Saint Matthew's area
http://www.bluegrassbrew.com/

Great microbrew with a lot on the menu. Summer Wheat Ale is outstanding in my book and ladies will like the raspberry Mead guarenteed. If you like bourbon, you might want to try the Bourbon Barrel Stout. Built-your-own pizza is an excellent choice as are the burgers. Great place to catch a game.

Mark's Feed Store - Multiple locations
http://www.marksfeedstore.com/

Very good BBQ that is pretty cheap (Not as good as the BBQ in Memphis but it is pretty good). Pulled pork and honey wings are excellent. If you like BBQ and you don't have a lot to spend, Mark's is a must eat place.

Buckhead's Mountain Grill across the river in Jeffersonville, IN
http://www.eatatbuckheads.com/locations/

Local chain of restaurants based here in Louisville. They serve a variety of food on their menu, from steak to Mexican to wings. The one in Jeffersonville has outdoor seating and is right on the river. Nice view of the Louisville skyline and a great place to eat and the food is good.

The Back Door - 1250 Bardstown Road http://thebackdoorlouisville.com/

Let's be honest about two things. The Back Door is a typical bar (pool and arcade games in the back with bar area up front). It isn't fancy, it isn't unique, and it isn't some special bar. However, it does have excellent food (fish sandwich and chicken wings are great), it is one of the cheapest places to get drinks in town, and it doesn't have a bad/rough-n-tumble type of crowd. If you are looking to get a bit tipsy before going out on the town, I'd stop by the Back Door first (particularly if you are going to $th Street Live....they will literally rape your wallet on drinks).

Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot - 3204 Frankfort Ave

Great pulled pork sandwich, the beer is cheap, the place has a very casual atmosphere, AND they have games (putt-putt, pool, cornhole). Very chill place and a great place to visit when in town IMO.

*******************************************************

My recommendation is that if you are coming with a group of guys to at least hit up Wick's and Cumberland Brews.

UofL07 had some great suggestions above. It sounds like you were probably at O'Shea's Irish Pub regarding the place with the fountain. It's a stone's throw from Flanigan's and Molly Malone's, if we're seeing a theme here name wise! Essentially across the street and just down a little is Wick's, which has a good beer selection and excellent pizza.

And if someone in the group likes Bloody Mary's, The Outlook Inn is the place to go down the street (heading back towards downtown). It's more of a hole in the wall but I've ended plenty of nights there with a Bloody Mary.

Also just throwing it out there, but most people are surprised by how late the bars are open in Louisville compared to some other cities. Closing time is 4am.

RE: Question for Lousville folks
Where are you gonna stay Downtown? If you want an all out Louisville experience stay at either The Brown or The Seelbach. It's pricey but worth it. If you stay at the Seelback take the historical tour. It's great. You can see the back passages that John Dillenger and Al Capone use to escape the police from and you'll get the story of the ghost who roams the halls. It's a lot of fun. And.... definitely go to Bardstown Rd.

RE: Question for Lousville folks
When I am out there for business, they normally put me up in the East End, near the two malls out there. Things are really not that far. I can get into downtown Louisville from the East End on 64 or 264 to 65 in less than 30 minutes during the non-rush. I like Bardstown Road, nice places to eat and lots of mom and pop shops. The Cake & Pie shops, Jack Fry's, Wick's Pizza, and Twig and Leaf or normally my favorites. 4th Street live is much like the Power Plant in Baltimore, nice but very commercial. But getting from UofL's campus to downtown to Bardstown and to the East End is not too bad but can be a pain during the afternoon rush.

The Brown is a nice place to stay as well, last time I was there, we actually went into Old Louisville and ate at Bucks, which is really good. Parts of Old Louisville is suspect and run down (going west), but overall, it is a nice area. The Brown has a nice restaurant in it called the English Grill I think, and a great Hot Brown and Derby Pie which is a treat.

That's good to know. I can recall being in college and traveling to places like Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta and being shocked that the bars closed at 1:00 or 2:00. Coming from Memphis I was used to most bars staying open until 3:00, 5:00 on Beale Streeet, and even a handful staying open all night. Walking out of a bar when the sun has already risen is a surreal experience.

Chicago is 4:00 in most areas including the Lincoln Park and Wicker Park/Ukrainian Village neighborhoods. New York is 4:00. New Jersey varies by municipality from 1:30 AM to 4:00 AM with an average of 2:00 AM.

RE: Question for Lousville folks
Here’s another vote for staying downtown, but also cabbing it to the Highlands to party.

Just make sure you don’t get let off at say Phoenix Hill Tavern, which is at the end of the Highlands closest to downtown. You want to go further down to get the better experience, like the general area of Bardstown Road and Grinstead Drive.

Also CardianlJim, I have to un-recommend your Quality Inn suggestion; not a good area these days with a lot of riff-raff around.

Same way in college in Buffalo. Canada was 2am, Buffalo was 4am*. Could go to Canada for casino or other entertainment, then come back to Buffalo and drink for another two hours.

*Niagara County was 4am on Saturdays & Sundays, 2am the rest of the week. Erie County where Buffalo is I believe is 4am all week.
