Strong has never been a head coach and there have been questions in regards to his defensive schemes. Also, he has worked with top tier talent while at UF and some question his team management skills.

Yes, let's face it: There's probably some political correctness going on here. The media like to see more black assistants get HC gigs, so the A+ grade probably reflects that. As you note, Strong has no track record as an HC and had all the advantages at UF.

A+ grades should be for coaches with very strong track records, like Alabama hiring Nick Saban.

Now call me biased if you want. but i thinkt that next to ND getting Kelly, Holtz was the best hire on that board.

You really believe that they gave him that grade because of his skin color!? Wow. Then why didn't they have Turner Gill up there? He has a more proven track record and he just took a BCS job. So why not put him up there?

First, they did pretty much put him up there, gave him an A, right? And probably unmerited. I mean, here's a guy coming off a 5-7 record and 5th place MAC finish at Buffalo and a Big 12 team deserves an "A" for hiring him? Really?

Second, Gill is already an HC, and while the media likes to see african-americans move from an HC job with a small school to a big school, the big thing with them is the move from assistant to HC.

That's the impetus behind the rooney rule in the NFL, etc.

He was credited with building a strong foundation and set them up so well they continued to be successful after he left. This coach left CUSA to join The Big East to all the can't miss accolades. Sound familiar? He took over a Top 10 rated program. He talked of winning a National Championship his FIRST year. He proceeded to lead the Preaseason Top 10 program to its first bowl-less season in 10 years. Guessed yet who I am talking about?

Previous success as a head coach doesn't guarantee success when you take a new job. It makes the fans feel all warm and fuzzy. Helps them grow a set so they can talk tough on the messageboards but that's where it ends. The truth is though it's all speculation. No one outside of Cincinnati predicted that Brian Kelly would have the success he had with the Bearcats when he was hired. They were too busy packing up The Big East titles to ship them to Louisville because UofL hired Kragthorpe. Kragthorpe was the can't miss hire. He had won at Tulsa. If he could win at Tulsa, what could he do at Louisville with the facilities, the success, and the all money he could ever want.

Not saying Holtz is the next Kragthorpe. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. (At least not anyone in The Big East.) Take it from those that know. Just because your new coach got it done in CUSA doesn't mean squat in The Big East.

No disrespect, but you have to be high on drugs if you're comparing Holtz to Kragthorpe. Heck, why not compare Strong to Greg Robinson, they took the same path to becoming a head coach right?

LOL, if anyone is comparing their coach to Gerg, you have bigger problems than you know. LOL.

Why not grade the coaches after a year or 2?

I understand completely. I was just pointing out that Holtz, like Kragthorpe, had been a successful CUSA coach that took over a respectable Big East team. In my opinion, at least I hope, that's where the comparison ends.

If Greg had been from CUSA I would have used him. As for comparing him to Strong, Robinson was a one year DC from Texas, Charlie spent 8 years at Florida. I do understand the point you are trying to make.

One question I have for Syracuse fans. Why did they ever hire Robinson? He had one year of college coaching under his belt in the 15 before he joined Syracuse. What kind of recruiting success could someone have that had been away from the college game for so long.
