UL's all time favorite UCONN player now goes to the NFL. Another former UCONN 1 star player making to the NFL via the CFL route.

MONTREAL — The Grey Cup-champion Montreal Alouettes have a huge hole to fill this off-season.

Kick-returner Larry Taylor, the CFL's top special-teams player in 2009, was one of four players to sign with the NFL's New York Jets on Thursday. The five-foot-six, 177-pound Taylor spent the last two seasons with Montreal. He had a CFL-high 788 punt-return yards on 89 returns (8.9-yard average) last year and returned two for touchdowns.

He also averaged 20.8 yards on 51 kickoff returns. In addition to being the league's top special-teams performer, Taylor was an East Division and CFL all-star this past season.

In 2008, he led the Als in punt return yards with 517 and was sixth in the CFL, despite starting the season on Montreal's practice squad.

Taylor played his college football at UConn, registering 25 catches for 259 yards as a senior. He also had 31 punt returns for 357 yards and two TDs and 11 kickoff returns for 205 yards.

Good for him. The line between missing the NFL and having to go the CFL route is fairly close. During the Baltimore and New England game today the broadcasters said that Tom Brady nearly ended up in the CFL.
It was only after Bill Bellichek did many interviews and analysis and decided to take a chance on Tom Brady in the 6th round. If one of the best quarterbacks of our era nearly ended up in the CFL what does that say about the NFL's talent evaluation process. I think Larry Taylor will have a good chance in the NFL. Thats a lot of punt return yards and attempts so he must be pretty good.

Brady did not have all the physical tools NFL scouts were looking for out of college. What they missed is the brain factor. Brady is a very smart QB.

Larry Taylor is still one of UCONN's most electrifying special team players. Regardless what UL fans think of him, he can take it to the house anytime he touches the ball. He will be hard to handle in the NFL. I thought he should have got a chance right out of college but it is better late than never.

I bet the NFL scouts looked at him coming out of UConn and since he was only 5'7" they decided he did not have the size to play in the NFL. Happens all the time. Its easy to judge the physical characteristics but its difficult to determine their mind and each persons heart and their determination.
