Why did you change your name from the Rifles to the Spartans?

I saw a banner from their 1982 NAIA National Championship and it said USCS Rifles.

RE: Question for you invisible Upstate fans
I think they did it about 5-10 years ago, when the school changed its name from USC Spartanburg to USC Upstate.

Personally, I think "Rifles" has a whole '70s ABA kinda cool ring to it. Any bunch of dopes can be the "Spartans."

An interesting point of view to be certain.

RE: Question for you invisible Upstate fans
So they get rid of a cool original sounding nickname like the Rifles plus change their main name from Spartanburg to Upstate? They should have kept USC Spartanburg as there name too. USC Upstate has such a small college feel to it. At least USC Spartanburg makes it sound like they might belong Division I.

It sounds like their leaders might be worse than ours!
